PayPal is seeking a high caliber and energetic attorney with experience in financial services regulation and advertising technology to support the PayPal Shopping team in its global mission to develop powerful new commerce experiences that will fuel stronger relationships between merchants and consumers around the world.
The Director, Product Counsel will
Provide proactive, timely and business-focused legal advice to the PayPal Shopping team on a variety of legal and compliance issues.
Advise on the design and modification of products and services, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
Review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance with applicable laws.
Develop appropriate terms, conditions, and disclosures for new product offerings.
Remain up to date on relevant changes in consumer protection laws, financial regulation, privacy regulation, and advertising laws.
Work with PayPal’s M&A Integration team to provide legal support to newly acquired businesses and related products and services in the commerce space.
Work with other members of the PayPal legal team and cross-functional teams in support of the PayPal Shopping team.
The successful candidate will have the specific qualifications and experience:
J.D.
or equivalent required.
7 or more years of experience practicing either in-house (or in an equivalent setting) or at a reputable law firm, with a focus on financial services and e-commerce.
Ability to advise on financial services regulations; data privacy laws as they relate to financial institutions; consumer protection laws; and other guidance coming out of federal and state agencies such as the CFPB and the FTC.
Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity.
Confident self-starter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively provide sound legal advice, exercise good business judgment, and work well with other attorneys, management, and cross functional stakeholders.
Familiarity with, and strong interest in, PayPal, Venmo, Honey, mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the payments industry.
Comfortable with gray areas and interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts.
Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
Admitted to, and in good standing with, a state bar.
