Director – Computational Biomedicine

The Director, Computational Biomedicine (CBM), is responsible for the strategic planning, management, implementation, and oversight of all activities related to the overall achievement of computational biomedicine and bioinformatics.

The Director will provide effective leadership and vision for CBM to grow.

In conjunction with the CBM leadership team, the incumbent will establish and implement the strategic vision for delivering on translational and clinical services, ensure clear communication to leadership on established key performance indicators (KPIs), and oversee and manage a centralized team, inspiring a results-driven environment across CBM.

The Director will create development and implement the computational infrastructure for high-throughput biological data processing, analysis of interpretative biology, and algorithm development.

Specifically design and manage bioinformatics methods, informatics systems and commercial systems of varying complexity in the context of research, development, product validations and clinical studies.

Evaluates, develops, and validates the data management systems needed to support high-volume clinical tests through Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

The Director will foster a culture that collaborates with departments across the organization to identify unmet needs and opportunities as well as ensuring the highest level of service to all clients.

The position requires working closely with cross-functional teams including Cedars-Sinai Research Teams & Cedars-Sinai Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) to ensure software delivery while adhering to Cedars-Sinai compliance and information security standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee the day-to-day operations of CBM and ensure its overall successful short-term and long-term operations.

Apply innovative thinking and performance measurements to analyze and support strategic decision-making.

Organize, motivate, and mentor members of staff at all levels to strategically grow CBM’s impact, programs, and products, to effectively fulfill its mission.

Communicate effectively with senior leadership by providing stakeholders with all information necessary to make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner.

Analyze and make recommendations on the impact of short
– and long
– term growth initiatives, planning, and introduction of new strategies and incorporate learnings and strategy into a documented business plan.

Act as a strategic advisor and consultant offering expert advice on contracts, negotiations or business deals that CBM may enter into.

Creates an environment and culture that focuses on fulfilling CBM’s mission, vision, values, while obtaining top line revenue and profitability goals.

Cultivates a strong team-oriented culture of accountability, with a focus on creating best-in-class experiences for internal and external clients.

Plan, actively manage, and oversee CBM’s operations, research and development while ensuring CBM’s financial sustainability.

Develop complete business plans for the attainment of goals and objectives of CBM, that include financial forecasting, roadmaps, initiatives, and strategies.

Assure that CBM makes consistent and timely progress in achieving its mission and programmatic impact, through iterative and consistent review of key performance indicators.

Provide thoughtful leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides CBM’s mission, while preserving product and service quality.

Foster a collaborative working environment, encourage professional development, and champion accountability amongst staff.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Team Lead/Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:
Plans, leads, and directs work of staff to ensure goals and objectives are completed within established budget and deadlines are met.

Responsible for hiring, onboarding, managing schedules, personnel actions, performance reviews, and performance improvement plans.

Supervises the day-to-day work of employees, assigns work, ensures tasks are completed and deadlines are met.

 

Education :

Bachelors Degree in Biology, Life Science, Computer Science or related field, required.

Masters Degree in Business Administration, management or related field, required.

Experience & Skillset:

10 years of experience required working in a leadership capacity in the computer science, life sciences and/or diagnostic industry preferred.

7 years of progressive experience directly managing staff, setting goals and managing performance and budget.

5 years of experience launching innovative technology as service in multi-matrixed organizations, preferred.

Ability to apply critical thinking to analyze and interpret information and/or data.

Ability to convey and/or receive written/verbal information to/from various audiences in different formats.

Ability to communicate expectations and priorities, and clarify roles and responsibilities.

Ability to handle multiple demands and/or manage complex and competing priorities.

Ability to motivate, monitor, measure, recognize and improve performance and morale.

Ability to translate strategic thinking into operational objectives and plans.

Ability to use software applications and operate technological devices (e.g., computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.).

Must be able to manage competing priorities, while being extremely adaptable and flexible and maintaining a positive work environment.

Working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
