Lead Literacy Instructor

Advantage Cleveland: Tennis & Education ( AdvantageCLE ) is a highly regarded non-profit, community-based youth development program that serves Cleveland’s youth in both a summer camp as well as an after-school program.

AdvantageCLE provides children with tennis, fitness, wellness, literacy, STEM, and creative expression programs in order to promote hope, healthy living, and productive futures.

Since forming in 2010, AdvantageCLE has served over 4,000 of Cleveland’s youth.

In fall of 2018, AdvantageCLE partnered with Cleveland Metropolitan School District to provide an engaging tennis and literacy program.

Using tennis as a hook, AdvantageCLE’s after-school program also provides literacy support for children in grades K-5 that improves key reading skills.

Consistent, sustained one-on-one reading sessions twice per week makes this progress possible.

Other components include tennis instruction, wellness, poetry, educational games, and STEM activities.

The Literacy Instructor will provide ongoing educational and recreational programming in a meaningful and engaging after-school environment.

This position requires a qualified literacy instructor to coordinate and lead others in a four-day after-school program at Mary B.

Martin Elementary or an additional CMSD school.

The literacy instructor will plan all literacy intervention sessions for the three different age groups each week by coordinating materials with volunteers and tracking data for the students.

The overall goals of the AdvantageCLE After-School Program are: To create a safe space for children to learn and play tennis during the after-school hours.

To give young children a solid literacy foundation and support the school’s efforts to move children closer to age-appropriate reading levels.

To boost the self-esteem of students who are behind in reading levels and to challenge existing strong readers.

To provide positive role models to children by having high school and college-age tutors work one-on-one with them.

To provide a social-emotional curriculum to help children navigate several challenges they face.

To provide additional educational experiences like poetry and STEM activities to spark curiosity and joy among students.

Qualifications: A licensed elementary teacher or a university student obtaining a degree in early elementary education or reading preferred.

A background in literacy intervention or a reading specialist is preferred.

2-3 years of experience working with elementary students (K through 5th grade); preferably experience working with urban student populations.

Ability to create, plan, and execute activities on a daily basis.

Experience with maintaining control with children in a group setting.

Qualities Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of literacy and educational enrichment content.

Ability to organize and execute a leveled-reading intervention program with kindergarten through fifth graders.

Ability to communicate with and supervise high school and college staff, volunteers of all ages, and visitors to the program.

Ability to guard the health and well-being of students at all times.

Physically and mentally able to respond to situations and emergencies.

Ability to give direction and guidance to children clearly and in a respectful tone.

Lead with demonstrated success in moving a team towards achieving goals.

Literacy Instructor Responsibilities : Overall Planning and Engagement: Help to plan, coordinate and implement daily and weekly lessons.

Partner with the school administration to help coordinate logistics of the program.

Track data of the students and their progress in the leveled reading program.

Daily Activities : Supervise program by performing daily duties including, but not limited to: Help greet students at the beginning of the session at check-in.

Know and relate to the group: the program schedule, safety rules, and daily procedures.

Participate in snack distribution, along with other staff, in both set-up and clean-up.

Help supervise departure of students.

Collect and help evaluate data on students and the program.

Supervise and be responsible for the care of the various spaces provided for the after-school program.

Check in with Executive Director and school administrators to update on any issues that are encountered.

Relationship Building: Team Culture Help develop and support a strong, positive team culture among a group of children.

Support children, staff, volunteers, and families to actively engage in AdvantageCLE programs.

Take a strength-based, inclusive approach to relationships and culture-building.

Celebrate success and highlight small victories.

Create an atmosphere for individual growth through sport, fitness, educational activities and character development.

Hours/Dates: The after-school program is to run 9-15 weeks for each semester, starting October 4th through May 5th.

The student sessions will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-4:30pm.

Instructor hours on site will be 1pm
– 5pm Monday through Thursday (up to 16 hours).

Work Environment: The work environment will be indoors, including the gymnasium, classrooms, and large rooms where the noise level will be moderate to high.

Requirements: Background checks (FBI/BCI) are required for any staff member working in a CMSD school.

NetGeneration SafePlay video training is a mandatory requirement and staff will not be hired without the completion of these two requirements.

Certificates of completion are to be turned in before the beginning of the start of the ACE program.
