Braille Institute of America, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform the lives of those with vision loss. Each year, Braille Institute serves more than 37,000 people of all ages and demonstrates that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.We currently are seeking a part-time Instructor to work 32.5 hour per week at our Los Angeles Center. This position is responsible for:Responsible for teaching various subject and/or independent living skills to the visually impaired.Conduct seminars and workshops throughout the region for families, caregivers and professionals to better assist the visually impaired and promote independent living.May teach students to read and write Braille as well as use of Braille writersMonitors, evaluates and documents student progress, recommending additional resources and support to students and families as neededResearches subject matter and develops curriculum for classroom instructionPrepares lesson plans, gathers supplies adaptive devices and materials needed to teach studentsAssures classrooms are set up each day with supplies, tools equipment and materials needed for an effective and safe learning environmentMinimum Requirements:Communication, training, interpersonal, assessment, research, computer, presentation, organizational and time management skillsPosition operates standard office equipment, adaptive tools/equipment, and materials, needed to teach designed subjectsFrequent standing, walking and some lifting may be requiredSome travel within an assigned region may also be neededA high school diploma or equivalent is requiredTwo year or four-year college degree in a designated field of expertise is desirableStrong knowledge of the subject matter taught is requiredMay require conversational knowledge of another languageTwo-three years of experience teaching in a designated field of expertise is desirable, some work experience with the visually impaired is desirableConversational knowledge/ skill in SpanishKnowledge of the Unified English Braille (UEB) code, and ability to teach braille to VI/ blind students.Braille Institute is an equal opportunity employer (EEOC).
