Writer, Major Gifts

Under the direction of the Development Communications Manager, this position is responsible for increasing revenue by partnering with the Foundation President and frontline fundraising staff by creating high-level content to engage and solicit donors. The Major Gift Writer is a skilled communications professional with a background in persuasive writing and editing. This position is instrumental in telling AltaMed’s many stories in order to inspire people and institutions to support our mission and work. The Major Gift Writer creates engaging copy of proposals, value propositions, fundraising solicitations and articles for each quarterly newsletter targeted to donors. The Major Gift Writer also effectively manages several simultaneous projects. Working in close coordination with fundraisers, staff in the Office of the Foundation President, and other development staff, crafts customized, high-level communications from AltaMed s leadership to the our most generous donors. In addition, manages incoming and outgoing development email for the Foundation President and contributes to short- and long-term stewardship strategies for donors. Correspondence may include: meeting follow up, emails, special invitations, gift acknowledgments, cover letters. Communication strategies include: websites, email and print campaigns, acquisition proposals, etc. This person also analyzes the process workflows, and when appropriate, develops strategies to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their principal responsibilities.

  1. Research, gather and write content, review, edit and produce communications and receive approval for external donor-focused vehicles including enewsletter, Journal and solicitations.
  2. Proposals and reports for principal and major gifts including concept proposals, cases for support, programmatic write ups, one pagers.
  3. Manages process for all ad hoc development correspondence from the Foundation President. Works quickly and decisively to draft, revise, and produce timely letters, emails, and other development correspondence.
  4. Letters and other forms of communication from the Foundation President; and other donor cultivation and solicitation, as directed.
  5. Working knowledge of cultivation strategies, working closely with the cultivation team.
  6. Creates new standardized language for gift acknowledgment to reflect changes in fundraising objectives and respond to high-profile issues.
  7. Provides thought partnership to fundraisers to refine communications strategies for donor cultivation and solicitation; manages communications projects from inception to delivery; helps to ensure consistent messaging nationwide.
  8. Develops strategic philanthropic messaging; creates and distributes high-level standardized language; produces national, programmatic, and local templates; designs documents and templates.

  1. Bachelor s degree, preferably in English, marketing, or liberal arts field coupled with a minimum of three years of nonprofit organization experience writing.
  2. Recent digital marketing experience (content development, websites, social media, digital advertising, email)
  3. Bilingual English/Spanish desirable.
  4. Familiarity with non-profit online fundraising and CRM software, such as Raiser s Edge or other platforms a plus.
