DescriptionGENERAL PURPOSETo assist in the maintenance of the City’s water infrastructure, and the provision of a safe, dependable water supply to the City’s residents and businesses.CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICSThe fundamental reason this classification exists is to maintain the City’s water production and distribution system.Examples of DutiesThe following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.* Performs preventative maintenance on well pumps and motor equipment and well buildings and facilities;* Inspects booster pumps and well pumps, including checking for excessive noise, heat, vibration, leaks and proper fluid levels;* Maintains records of lubrication, calibration and maintenance performed on equipment and machinery and compiles data into written reports;* Responds to customer water complaints and supplies customer information by phone and in person;* Water meter reading;* Water distribution system repairs;* Assists in tasks necessary for installation of new water services: prepares materials, locates, digs trenches, welds and lays out pipes, sets meters and meter boxes, backfills, patches and cleans work area;* Maintains chlorine stations: changes cylinders, ensures that chlorine feed rate is normal and chlorine residual leaving the main plant is within limits;* Checks chlorine residual at locations throughout city;* Repairs water leaks: locates, digs, repairs, back fills, patches pavement, and cleans work areas;* Locates and marks water mains and services water lines;* Repairs broken sprinklers and sprinkler lines;* Responds to emergency call out after hours;* Issues 24 hour shutoff notices for delinquent bills and NSF checks;* Performs grounds maintenance at reservoir and pumping sites, drains and cleans out reservoirs and maintains treatment plant facilities;* Performs building maintenance, such as electrical, lighting, and plumbing;* Maintains tools, equipment, and materials used in the work;* Ensures cathodic protection;* Performs annual maintenance on spreading basins, including road grading and basin side and bottom cleaning;* Maintains and repairs park play equipment;* Removes hazardous objects from streets;* Repairs city gates;* Performs other related duties as required.Typical QualificationsKnowledge of:* City of Sierra Madre water distribution systems;* Computer applications with remote machinery or facility operations;* Mechanical procedures for activating or controlling a well, booster station, pressure reducing valve, reservoir, and storage tank operations.Ability to:* Distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with alarm signal lights.* Operate keyboard devices such as calculators, PC, and CRT.* Determine the nature and urgency of a problem.* Establish priorities for own workload based upon such factors as need for immediate action, work objectives, and schedules.* Establish and maintain effective communications among superiors, subordinates, other departmental water operation personnel, and outside utility agencies.* Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.* Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.* Communicate orally with other City employees and outside agencies using a telephone, in face-to-face, one-to-one and group settings in the English language.* Make decisions in accordance with the rules, regulations, and ordinances, pertaining to assigned organizational unit.* Work under pressure (i.e., handling significant problems and tasks which come up simultaneously and/or unexpectedly and approaching deadlines).* Read, comprehend, and interpret written material in the English language.* Comprehend and analyze spreadsheet reports.* Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.Education/Training/Experience:High school diploma or equivalent; education sufficient to read, write and understand directions in English, and to successfully meet and deal with the public and other employees; one year of skilled experience in the construction and maintenance of potable water production and distribution systems or related labor, or semi-skilled work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:Must possess a valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s Vehicle Insurance Policy. Able to obtain and maintain a SWRCB Water Treatment Operator Grade 1 and SWRCB Water Distribution System Operator Grade 1.
