Position Name: Surgical Technologist Locations: Albemarle, NC 28001 Duration: 13 Weeks Day Shift: Saturday-Sun 7a-7p, Monday 7p-7a, 36 Hrs./week Job Summary: No procedures and no ‘uncommon’ US scans.

Only scanning ED and IP exams.

Assistance with transporting patients, paperwork, and all other tasks is always available as x-ray techs are trained to assist US on these shifts.

Essential Functions: Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient.

Refers any questionable orders to the Radiologist before performing procedure.

Conducts ordering physicians when there are discrepancies.

Assures each patient has been properly prepped for exam ordered.

Correlates prior exams, applicable test results, and lab data pertinent to exam being performed.

Properly greets each patient by name, utilizing AIDET, and states his/her name and job classification to the patient.

Adheres to WE ID policy by verifying the correct patient by checking the patients armband, asking the patient to state his/her full and DOB.

Prepares each patient for the procedure with a full explanation, providing necessary instructions, and answering any questions the patient may have.

Reviews inpatients charts to obtain pertinent clinical history.

Interviews patients for a complete medical history as pertains to the exam.

Records medical history on requisitions as needed for Radiologists.

Correlates other tests, test results and laboratory data with exam being performed.

Performs basic patient care functions.

Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patients condition.

Required CPR certification and able to initiate life support measures for patients when necessary.

Assists in Code Blue/Emergency Response procedures during medical emergencies, as needed.

Evaluates technical quality of exam and develops a superior varied technique for elevated efficiency in the department.

Is competent to differentiate artifacts from anatomical or pathological structures.

Recognizes imaging abnormalities and performs additional imaging as needed.

Assists Radiologist in performance of procedures of an invasive nature.

Performs all invasive procedures in accordance with blood borne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures.

Maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to blood borne pathogens and infectious disease.

Wears appropriate personal protective equipment during all procedures.

Is authorized to obtain medication, radiopharmaceuticals, or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner, authorized/certified technologist, or registered nurse.

Medications to include radioisotopes and contrast materials cannot be administered without appropriate clinical credentials, training, and certification to do so.

Employees designated to obtain these items may also participate in the ordering and distribution of inventory.

Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor, Lead Sonographer and/or Engineer.

Adheres to the hospital fire and safety procedures.

Attends mandatory in-service classes offered through the hospital.

Performs work in an accurate and timely manner in periods of crisis and emergency situations where time is critical.

Rotates shifts, on call schedule, holidays, and weekends as required.

Properly operates Radiology computer systems to include entering and charging exams and supplies.

Assists in maintaining the patient and QC log sheets.

Adheres to the departmental rules and regulations while always performing in a professional manner.

Education, License and Certifications: Certified by the American Radiology of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Vascular Technology is required.

Prefer graduate of a comprehensive medical diagnostic ultrasound program.

Registered technologists are responsible to maintain certification and obtain required CMEs before the end of their triennium.

CPR certification required.

Requires positive interpersonal skills in detail with patients, families, physicians, co-workers and supervisors.
