About this Position
As part of our middle market (Commercial Markets) underwriting team, you will focus on underwriting new and renewal middle market accounts and will contribute to raising PMA’s profile in the West by providing first-in-class underwriting service and expertise. This position can be based in either Southern or Northern California.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively market, identify, and underwrite prospective accounts in targeted industries.
- Direct and monitor underwriting activities to produce positive profit and expense results.
- Develop strong relationships with local brokers and effectively articulate PMA’s appetite.
- Participate in the development of broker management strategy and contribute to the development and execution of broker plans.
- Develop business plans with assigned brokers to achieve profitable growth, and renewal targets.
- Consult with Risk Control and Claims to bring value-added service to customers.
- Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance regulations.
- Through technical collaboration and guidance, work within established authority on assignments of increasing complexity.
- Exhibit high levels of teamwork, leadership, customer service, and persistence.
- Demonstrate strong analytical ability, and sound judgment to make informed and accurate decisions.
- Demonstrate commitment to Company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work.

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- CPCU designation preferred
- Five to seven years’ experience in commercial lines casualty underwriting.
- Strong technical skills in Workers Compensation, General Liability, Automobile, and Umbrella.
- Proven track record of premium growth and profitability in handling a book of business.
- Superior marketing skills and familiarity working with brokers of all types, specifically in the California market.
- Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
