VMware Tanzu GemFire is a distributed, in-memory, and transactional datastore designed to provide very high throughput with predictable latency.
GemFire is built on Apache Geode and is deployed throughout the world by demanding customers serving mission-critical applications in financial, telecommunications, retail, and transportation industries.
The GemFire team tackles the technical challenges that come with massively parallel distributed systems operating on terabytes of data across hundreds of nodes.
We delve into areas like query optimization, high-performance in-memory transaction and query processing, parallel and distributed execution of advanced data processing algorithms, resource management, and storage.
On this team, you’ll be working on hard, worthwhile problems with a collaborative team, accelerating your growth as an engineer.
What is the primary need or problem you will be responsible for?
VMware Tanzu GemFire needs to meet the highest standards in terms of quality and performance.
The integrity of the data stored in GemFire, as well as the availability of the cluster during adverse events is of mission critical importance to our customers.
We need tooling and processes to guarantee this.
To this end, the engineering team needs to get repeatable, timely feedback about all aspects of our products’ quality.
Within the first 6-12 months, what are the 2-3 most important performance goals I would be expected to complete for you to consider me successful in this role?
Understand the feature set of GemFire, its support for different platforms and client libraries.
Become proficient in our tools for running, writing, and analyzing system tests.
Identify testing gaps and pair with engineers to write new system tests in Java.
Adapt our Java-based tools and frameworks to work with Kubernetes.
What type of work will you be doing?
What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Analyze, predict, and prevent problems in a complex, distributed data product.
This includes anything from looking at low level networking problems, disk access, or race conditions and JMX to our integration with k8s or Spring and C++ client libraries.
Collaborate with teams to develop plans that ensure adequate test coverage across all aspects of the testing pyramid from unit testing to performance to integration with other products in the Tanzu ecosystem.
Advocate for processes and practices that keep the product continuously shippable.
Investigate product bugs to determine root cause analysis and recommend product behavior improvements.
