Supervising Attorney – Family Law Unit

WAGE RANGE: $89,000 to $115,000 per annum (DOE)
The Supervising Attorney of the Family Law Unit (FLU) supervises attorneys and support staff who provide legal services to low-income survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or child abuse in their family law matters.

This full-time exempt position reports to the Directing Attorney.
The ideal candidate wil have knowledge and experience in family law, domestic violence, and supervising, mentoring and leading a team with the ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks; with an empathetic and energetic attitude, a proven interest in social justice, a commitment to CLA SoCal’s mission, and ability to model our values (compassion, collaboration, trust, accountability, and excellence) in the performance of job duties.
Duties include but not limited to:
* Participate in local family law councils or domestic violence councils, and other advocacy coalitions.
* Coordinate with Complex Litigation Unit on FLU appellate work.
* Manage FLU’s various grants and contracts.

Ensure compliance with all funding requirements, deliverables and restrictions for each grant or contract.
* Act as the subject matter expert within the area of law supervised.
* Supervise legal work of staff attorneys and paralegals within the unit, with flexibility to supervise staff in Southeast Los Angeles County offices.
* Co-counsel cases as part of staff development and be responsible for training staff and overseeing their professional development.
* Mentor and train new attorneys and paralegals within the unit.
* Maintain a limited caseload for representation.
* Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and timekeeping in case management system (LegalServer).
* Responsible for setting unit priorities and implementing unit strategies to meet priorities.
* Conduct case reviews with all unit staff attorneys at least once a month.
* Train and supervise law students, pro bono attorneys, and other volunteers.
* Engage in policy advocacy, coordinate, and collaborate in policy campaigns with partner community-based organizations to improve systemic issues.
* Identify wrap-around legal services and work collaboratively with CLA SoCal’s various legal units.
* Manage grant deliverables and assist in grant reporting requirements in collaboration with CLA SoCal Grants Management staff in order to maintain and secure funding.
* Perform other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.

* Family Law and Domestic Violence experience is required.
* Must have a strong interest and background in working with survivors of domestic violence.
* Experience managing, supervising, and mentoring – required.
* Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate and lead teams.
* Juris Doctor and active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California Bar or member of another state bar and ability to register as a legal services provider.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience as an attorney in the related field or other areas of law relevant to unit practice.
* Expertise in unit practice area and knowledge of legal research methods.
* Proactive approach, anticipate problems, solution-focused, and able to think on their feet.
* High level of initiative and mature judgement in tackling multiple projects and tasks with limited supervision.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) Lawyaw (or other Judicial Council Form preparation program) and other software programs.
* Great organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
* Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, active insurance policy or other ability to travel frequently in and around the service area for representation and to engage with clients and community partners
– Required.
* Bilingual proficiency – Preferred.

Working conditions
The position requires working with individuals during moments of extreme stress and instability.

The position also requires the provision of culturally-sensitive and empathetic services.

Due to the COVID pandemic, our office is largely working remotely.

Exceptions include mandatory court appearances, required client meetings and hearings and some administrative staff.

This position is only temporarily remote, except for such mandatory appearances.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment before date of hire.
