Staff Attorney – Survivor and Family Empowerment

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Staff Attorney is responsible for coordinating and providing family law legal assistance, with a focus on serving domestic violence survivors. The SAFE Project focuses on assisting domestic violence survivors with family law matters, as well the indigent and limited-English proficient immigrant community. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Handle a variety of family law cases, including domestic violence restraining orders, dissolution of marriage cases, parentage cases, child custody and child support hearings, and other related family law matters
  • Provide court representation
  • Counsel and advise clients on their legal rights, prepare court forms and documents, draft declarations, and conduct legal research and writing including memorandum of points and authorities
  • Coordinate client services with legal interns, legal assistant/advocate, and partner social service agencies
  • Conduct community legal clinics
  • Coordinate and conduct education and outreach presentations at community forums and trainings
  • Produce periodic progress reports to funders
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • J.D. and Active membership in California State Bar required
  • 2 years of experience in family law preferred

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience in domestic violence advocacy and/or a sincere commitment to working on behalf of domestic violence survivors
  • Strong writing, communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Prior experience handling independent projects or assignments with legal services preferred
  • Ability to work with diverse racial and ethnic groups
  • Availability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
  • Bilingual ability in at least one Asian language strongly preferred and
  • Access to reliable means of transportation.
