Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Materials Engineer with both metallics and non-metallics experience to support new product development as well as ongoing production programs (such as RS-25, AEPS, THAAD, eMMRTG, ORION, Dreamchaser, and in-space satellite programs). In addition, in-depth knowledge of electrical fabrication materials and processes in accordance with both industry and NASA specifications is mandatory for the position.
This position may be filled at this level or one level higher.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
60%- Materials Engineer providing electrical fabrication materials and processes support for the design, development, and production of space electronics for both solid and liquid rocket motor systems. NASA has specific workmanship standards for electronic assembly for which the candidate must have a thorough understanding, from engineering requirements, to shop floor, and quality perspectives. This requires a candidate with manufacturing experience as well as engineering know-how, with knowledge of common defects, and the ability to interpret requirements and to interface competently with knowledgeable customers, from both government and commercial entities. Specialized training in some of these requirements is required by NASA, and the candidate will be expected to provide training to the suppliers. In-depth knowledge in technical areas such as soldering materials and processes, circuit board fabrication, defects and acceptance criteria, componentselection and failure analysis of electronic components, bonding, plating, potting, corrosion, insulation, conformal coating and processing are all required. Regular interface with suppliers within these areas of expertise will be required.
30% – Perform engineering analysis of nonconforming hardware including coordination of analysis for disposition of Material Review Board documents.
10%- Conduct failure investigations for root causes of process and material anomalies.
Requirements
Bachelor or Master”s degree in Materials, Metallurgical, or Electrical Engineering discipline and minimum of five years of directly related technical experience in engineering disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree typically preferred. Strong project planning, technical leadership, written and oral communication skills are required. Direct experience with space electronics design requirements and electronic assembly fabrication methods, including multilayer circuit board fabrication methodologies is desired.
Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. Candidate must be experienced using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This position requires the ability to read, interpret, prepare, and issue drawings and related specifications, as well as the ability to use test and other measurement equipment. Six Sigma knowledge and experience in the aerospace industry are desired.
May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship, U.S. Permanent Residency or other status as a U.S. Person. Must be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Employee may need to work near moving mechanical parts and in loud working conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles. Laboratory work will also be required to evaluate materials and failure analysis.
In addition, employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
