SoCalGas: Threat & Risk Engineer I/Ii

NOTE: This position can be filled at a different level based on the final scope of job responsibilities and job requirements.Primary Purpose:Applies and translates technical expertise in other engineering disciplines to build knowledge and expertise in risk assessment principles, and uses strong analytical ability to perform systematic risk analysis.

Provides increasingly integrated, data-driven and quantified safety and reliability assessments covering one to two Integrity Management Program assets such as Transmission Pipeline Integrity Management Program (TIMP), Storage Integrity Program (SIMP), Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP), or Risk Assessment and Facilities Integrity Management Program (FIMP).

Leverages technical ability in select engineering disciplines to enable effective likelihood of failure and consequence of failure modeling.

Provides analysis to support integration and balancing of findings in consideration of the full Integrity Management System, safety, regulatory compliance, and business need.

Measures the effects of Preventative & Mitigative actions on threats of one to two systems or programs.

Provides technical recommendations that will be used by more advanced team members and manager to advise leadership and senior management to drive risk differentiation that will enable optimized resource decisions and potentially new programs.Duties and Responsibilities:Performs Threat Evaluation and Risk Assessment covering one to two mature and complex Transmission Pipelines, Storage, Facilities and Gas Distribution Assets by applying engineering risk assessment principles toward increasingly integrated, data-driven, and quantified safety and reliability.

Performs work with a medium degree of autonomy and review of some completed work.

Aggregates results, in an often ambiguous environment and circumstances, from select technical disciplines, including some but not limited to:GeotechnicalStructural integrity/ reliability theoryAssessment including non-destructive evaluationCorrosion controlFracture mechanicsMaterials scienceStatistics, Machine learningPipeline designHuman factors.Translates moderately complex results into a unified and integrated risk framework that clearly expresses threat likelihood, consequence, and business value (return on investment) balanced with safety and regulatory compliance.

Collaborates with senior staff to develop solutions to a diverse scope of moderately complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of readily identifiable factors.Applies technical knowledge in risk and threat assessment and potentially in some of the above specific engineering disciplines.

Uses in-depth knowledge in regulations, standards and evaluation of risk regarding integrity management programs to provide support and technical expertise to various project teams in System Integrity, Gas Engineering and Gas Operation Organizations.

Leverages understanding of different organizations in engineering and operations, and their distinct processes, services and responsibilities to participate in and potentially lead cross-functional teams.

Manages and directs programs and/or projects that span multiple departments which provide department, division, or company-wide benefits.

Makes decisions with impact on activities of his or her organization.

Assists team members, both Company employees and outside contractors, to achieve results and goals in the completion of their work.

Coordinates input from, and participation with, various departments within the Company as needed to meet project objectives.Assists or may lead efforts to develop and improve new and existing Company standards, specifications, procedures and policies governing TIMP, SIMP, FIMP and DIMP, specifically regarding Threat Identification and Risk Assessment.

Provides input into the development of new programs related to research & development which may result from risk and threat analysis.Communicates moderately complex information with stakeholders.

Confidently conveys thoughts, ideas, and/or solutions to management, while being respectful and mindful of other’s contributions to the same discussion.Interprets state and federal codes, industry standards and Company specifications.

Researches impact of potential changes in regulatory codes and standards.

Stays abreast of the latest changes, trends and technological advancements in the industry through attendance at conferences and seminars, continuing education, literature, etc.Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Required.

Master’s Degree in Engineering or Mathematics Preferred.Engineer II Experience: 5 years of Engineering experience including 2 yrs related to risk or reliability or threat evaluation or integrity management.Engineer I Experience: 8 years of Engineering experience including 4 yrs related to risk or reliability or threat evaluation or integrity management (Required).

Preferred focus on integrity management and/or risk engineering.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Engineering & Technical Knowledge: Must have a thorough, up-to-date knowledge of specific engineering disciplines to analyze and solve problems as appropriate to area of assigned responsibility.
