Senior Fitness Editor – LIVESTRONG

We are looking for a Senior Fitness Editor to help us improve and grow LIVESTRONG.com’s fitness vertical. This position requires strong editing and organizational skills as well as a thorough knowledge of SEO best practices and ability to communicate well with freelance writers. You will be in charge of both new article creation as well as existing article renovation to strengthen the vertical’s overall authority in the fitness space.

You’ll Report To: Managing Editor, LIVESTRONG.com

A typical day as a Senior Fitness Editor might include:

  • Editing and publishing 2-4 stories daily
  • Brainstorming and pitching both timely stories with a news peg as well as utilitarian and service-driven evergreen stories
  • Providing feedback on fitness pitches from other members of the editorial team
  • Strategically planning the daily, weekly and monthly editorial lineup for the fitness vertical
  • Assigning stories to both full-time staff and freelance writers, and ensuring stories are produced and published in a timely manner and to standard
  • Conducting keyword research and executing plans around a defined SEO keyword universe in order to improve the fitness vertical’s evergreen content offering and grow search traffic
  • Recruiting and maintaining relationships with talented freelance writers and experts in the fitness space
  • Planning and carrying out the broader vision and strategy for the fitness vertical, including brainstorming tentpole projects and special features
  • Working with the Audience Development team to develop and hone strategies for the vertical in order to achieve monthly traffic goals across channels, including social media, email newsletters, search engines and referral platforms
  • Working with the Audience Development team to participate in and promote the LIVESTRONG.com Challenge Group on Facebook
  • Attending fitness industry events and holding desksides (virtually, for now)
  • Keeping your finger on the pulse of the fitness world in order to stay abreast of promising new developments and trends

You’ll be successful if you are passionate about creating high-quality, service-driven fitness content that helps readers at all stages of their health and fitness journeys. The Senior Fitness Editor is responsible for assigning and top-editing all stories within the fitness vertical. Well-versed in the fitness space, you know exactly what a reader is looking for when they Google “best beginner weight-training routine for older adults” and how to present that information in an easy-to-read, authoritative way that gives the reader everything they need to know to move forward. While this is primarily an editing role, there is the possibility for writing stories occasionally, as well.

What You Have

  • 5-8 years editorial experience working with fitness content
  • At least 1-2 years experience managing 1 or more people, or 3-4 years working closely with regular contributors in a near-managerial capacity.
  • A passion for everything fitness, from the latest trends to the need-to-know basics.
  • A large rolodex of freelance and expert writers who specialize in fitness coverage.
  • Meticulous editing skills for grammar, voice and flow.
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools to extract actionable insights from data.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage your time productively.
  • Ability to think creatively about packaging, presentation and promotion of fitness articles.
  • An interest in helping people from all backgrounds live their healthiest, happiest lives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Not afraid to wear multiple hats – no job being too small or too large.
