Senior Analytics Engineer

At Surfline Wavetrak, we do great work from anywhere. This ranges from our headquarters in Huntington Beach, CA, to across the globe. This position is eligible to be based from a variety of locations, including full-time remote.

Summary:

As a member of the Analytics Engineering group, you’ll work on a variety of projects that take our user data and provide insights for the entire company. You’ll work with our strategy team through a multitude of ways and have a hand in shaping new features and influence strategic business decisions, while delivering on a technical roadmap. This is a highly collaborative role where one will shape and build our data platform, perform a wide range of formal and ad hoc analyses, and help internal business stakeholders make better, data-driven decisions. Our stack is currently built with Segment, Stitch, Redshift, Periscope, Airflow, Singer.io and a few other tools.

What You’ll Do:

  • Use SQL and dbt (data build tool) to build data models
  • Refactor, clean, and test data models for performance and quality
  • Manage projects end-to-end and communicate clearly to stakeholders
  • Assure that our data integrations and jobs are running and accurate
  • Perform analysis using SQL, Python, and R (or any combination of) around product usage, marketing, and a/b testing
  • Contribute and identify opportunities for improvement in data warehouse and data modeling design
  • Setup, test, and monitor tracking from Segment and other data generating sources
  • Build ETL/ELT packages using Singer.io’s opened source framework (Python) along with job scheduling (Airflow and others)
  • Improve data governance efforts and process
  • Provide mentorship to junior members of team

What We’re Looking For:

  • Solid experience working on large scale data platform including end to end data lifecycle (data ingestion, data processing, visualization, and analytics)
  • 5+ year(s) experience building and managing complex multi-dimensional data models 
  • 3+ year(s) experience managing large scale data lakes/warehouses, preferably cloud-based
  • 5+ year(s) working in critical line of business data domains such as customer behavior tracking, A/B testing, growth marketing – Direct to consumer businesses preferred
  • 2+ years(s) of using R or Python for analysis
  • 5+ year(s) advanced SQL – you know the difference between SQL that “gets the job done” vs performant SQL (prototype vs production)
  • Knows when to apply “precision” vs “accuracy”
  • Able to understand and new technologies very quickly and has knowledge of full technical landscape
  • Experience with data governance project(s) and process implementation
  • An insatiable drive to learn quickly and stay-up-to date on industry trends, tools, and more
  • You can get things done without perfect resources, are innovative and work with a sense of urgency
  • You have high standards, take ownership of your work, and are invested in the outcome
  • Command line and git experience

You May Also Have:

  • Passion for ocean-going activities
  • Experience using PAAS & SAAS data offering like Segment, FiveTran, Snowflake, AWS, GCP
  • Experience using Atlassian products
  • MS/MA or MBA degree
  • BS degree in computer science
