Upper School Principal

The Founding Upper School Principal will serve as a member of the senior leadership team working closely with the Head of School to lead all aspects of the academic, cultural, physical,
co-curricular, and financial aspects of the division.
The appointee will also help recruit and develop Chinese and Western staff members to ensure that classroom teaching aligns with the School’s mission and vision. Huaer Collegiate intends to attract educators who have a passion for educating the whole child, and faculty and staff will be expected to contribute actively to the whole life of the School, working with scholars beyond the classroom in advisory, co-curricular, and residential contexts.

This role commands a highly competitive salary and benefits package, including high-quality housing; flights for employee and dependents, and medical insurance for employee and dependents. Full tuition support will be provided for any successful applicant with school-age children. The position will be offered on an initial three-year contract term with annual renewal thereafter.

REQUIREMENTS

At Huaer Collegiate, teachers are committed to whole child education and therefore, play multiple roles. They should not only be able to impart knowledge, but also be able to have heart-to-heart talks with scholars and act as their academic and life advisors. These responsibilities put forward a deeper level of requirements for teachers, such as the compatible vision for whole child, personalized education, rigorous attitude, outstanding academic ability, and love for education and children. The most competitive candidates will have most or all of the following credentials and experience:

    • Success as principal or a senior leader in a high school setting. (Prior boarding school or residential life experience would be advantageous but not essential.)
    • Notable experience supporting, and assessing secondary school teachers’ professional development.
    • An advanced degree.
    • Experience with the AP curriculum and programs. (Familiarity with the IB programis desirable as well.)
    • A record of challenging and supporting academically ambitious students.
    • The ability to learn and apply local Chinese educational standards as well as new technologies.
    • An ability to collect, interpret, and disseminate data wisely, especially with respect to student performance metrics.
    • A demonstrated interest in contributing to the whole child educational experience. Experience in a dual language immersion environment.
    • The ability to work collaboratively and contribute to the development of an outstanding school.
    • Prior international experience is not required, but preferred.
    • Fluency in Mandarin is not required, but a working knowledge of the language and a willingness to learn are a plus.
