Job Overview: This is a half-time, night shift position; hours are from 7:00pm to 7:30am.
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care in accordance with known/accepted standards of practice and AVH policy.
Utilizes the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.
Works in support of the medical staff treatment plan and makes recommendations for changes to medical treatment plan as appropriate.
Educates patients and family around the plan of care and disease management.
Actively supports the nursing philosophy by striving for excellence in patient care, professional development, interpersonal relations, time management, and continuous quality improvement.
Primary Scope of Responsibilities: Fully competent in the primary nurse role on unit; performs patient and family assessment and problem identification, plans care accordingly; implements and evaluates plan of care so that problems are resolved.
Maintain competency in the care of the medical surgical patient with emphasis on orthopedic and general surgeries.
Maintain competency in the care of the pediatric patient.
Maintain competency in the care of the patient requiring telemetry monitoring.
Cross-train to OB and the care of the postpartum patient (or ICU when approved by director).
Clinical Skills : Demonstrates Emergency Nursing Skills in compliance with AVH policy, JCAHO, CMS, CAH Standards and National Patient Safety Goals.
These skills include a professional introduction, timely triage, compassionate care, complete and accurate documentation, medication safety, appropriate and timely reassessment, a team approach to communicating patient’s care and change of status, and timely communication with other departments and House Supervisor for admissions or continuum of care.
Technical Skills : Demonstrates competency and knowledge of equipment and procedures commonly performed in the ED and Trauma Room.
Maintains all required certifications.
Departmental Responsibilities : Actively participates in department meetings with attendance of 80% or better.
Completes five chart audits per month.
Monitors equipment status and identifies need for repairs.
Stocking and supply assessment as part of daily shifts.
Reads and responds appropriately to departmental emails and postings.
Maintains awareness of AVATAR patient satisfaction improvement initiatives.
Demonstrates role awareness and seeks individualized/department specific continuing education that improves patient care or professional practice.
Areas of focus should include but are not limited to: orthopedic trauma management including splinting, wound care, procedural sedation, trauma patient management, high altitude related illness, head injury assessment and management, pain management, stroke assessment and management, chest pain and cardiac arrest management.
Participates in Annual ER Winter Workshop and AVH Skills Fair.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements: Current Colorado RN License (or compact) Minimum of 1 full year of RN experience in a high-volume ER setting is required.
