The California Department of State Hospitals is currently looking for highly qualified candidates to serve as Hospital Police Officers at several of our facilities throughout California.

Job Description and Duties:

Under the supervision of the Hospital Police Sergeant, the Hospital Police Officer will perform basic law enforcement duties, and other related duties as required. The Hospital Police Officer is also responsible for maintaining a secure and safe operation for the welfare of patients, staff, and the public.

The Department of State Hospitals – Metropolitan is accepting applications for permanent full-time Hospital Police Officer positions. Vacancies exist in our Hospital Police Department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

AGE

Must be 21 years of age by date of appointment.

EDUCATION

Graduation from a U.S. high schoolG.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required, or possession of a college degree (Associate of Arts or higher) from an accredited college or university.

CITIZENSHIP

United States citizenship or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship at the time of application.

DRIVER?S LICENSE

Must possess a valid California driver?s license by date of appointment.

BACKGROUND

As a minimum requirement, a thorough background investigation must be conducted prior to a candidate?s appointment or training as a Hospital Police Officer. Additionally, must have no felony convictions and eligible to own/possess a firearm.

Working Conditions:

The California Department of State Hospitals is the largest forensic mental health hospital system in the nation. Hospital Police Officers are responsible for the supervision and security of individuals and property, ensuring policies and procedures relating to safety and security are followed and maintaining a secure and safe operation. Hospital Police Officers maintain law and order on hospital grounds, patrolling and protection of hospital buildings, and monitoring the activity and movement of patients and visitors ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies.

This classification receives an $800 Recruitment and Retention (R&R) monthly bonus in addition to the regular monthly salary listed.

Special Requirements:

NOTE: Approval of the State Safety Retirement designation from the California Department of Human Resources is pending.

The salary range listed does not reflect the approximate 9.23% salary reduction in employee compensation that is included in the 2020-21 California State Budget in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19. This reduction in salary will be offset by two Personal Leave Program (PLP) days per pay period. Details of PLP and specific salary rates may be addressed during the hiring process.
