Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Special Working Conditions: Shift work on a rotating 12-hour schedule. Frequent overtime due to court attendance and special details. Subject to emergency call-back conditions.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon the candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The salary range for this classification is $6,097 – $ 7,669 monthly.

Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant, the Police Officer performs patrol duties of University property and grounds, by vehicle, foot, or bicycle to protect the campus property, facilitate, and visiting public against criminal activity; enforces laws and traffic regulations; issues citations and apprehends criminal offenders; conducts crowd control during major events; investigates and prepares reports on crimes; provides general information and assistance to the public; appears in court as necessary; administers first aid; and other law enforcement duties as assigned.

Required Education:
Must have completed a Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) certified basic police academy. High School diploma or equivalency with an overall score of 45 and a standard score of not less than 35 on any section of the test or have attained a score on a written test equivalent to that attained by the average high school graduate.

Must upload a copy of the most recent P.O.S.T certificate with the application.

Required Experience:
Special minimum qualifications for Police Officers. Pass a medical examination, physical agility test, written examination, psychological examination, a background check requiring fingerprinting, and pass a drug test. Be a U. S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to submitting an application for this position. Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Not have a domestic violence felony conviction. Be of good moral character. Be able to read and write at the level necessary to perform the job of a Police Officer as determined by job-related examinations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Intermediate or advanced P.O.S.T. Certificate or Bachelor of Arts/Sciences degree is preferred.

Experience as a full-time Police Officer with a basic P.O.S.T. certificate is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations related to the work performed.
  • Assess law enforcement or other hazardous situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Prepare clear and concise procedural reports.
  • Skill in interacting and resolving a variety of sensitive situations.
  • Ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with the campus community, general public, state and local public safety agencies, and others.
  • Ability to interact with culturally diverse groups and individuals.

Certification: Police vehicles, computers, and standard-issued police equipment, including firearms.

Responsibilities

60% Patrols, on foot or by vehicle, all parking lots, the perimeter of the facilities, and the campus interior to safeguard state property and visiting public from criminal activity. Checks all doors, windows, and gates for security and makes necessary reports as to their condition. Makes reports of all building and equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, fire hazards, and irregularities encountered on his tour of duty. Keeps an activity log on his observances and actions. Performs duties with minimum supervision and uses independent judgment.

15% Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes reported and takes necessary action, within the limits of prescribed policies and procedures, to correct the situation, or if necessary, contacts the appropriate university authorities for guidance and assistance.

10% Initiates crime preventive measures and where applicable, enforces laws, traffic regulations, university rules, and safety regulations. Makes arrests when required and appears as a witness in court.

10% Provides general information and assistance to the public.

5% Provides security for large gatherings, assemblies, or other campus activities such as registration, athletic events, or social events. Controls and directs traffic during peak hours of traffic flow and other law enforcement duties as assigned.
