Personal Care Scientist

Job Summary

The Personal Care Scientist will be part of a diverse technical team responsible for the innovation of new products and the support of current operations & technologies associated with the Company. This is an active position requiring significant hands-on lab work and applications development. Personal leadership and a bias for action are key.

Job Responsibilities

• Works with Marketing to identify and validate potential new product opportunities focused within the broad arena of Personal Care by defining and demonstrating compelling value propositions for existing and new products.

• Works in conjunction with the Customer Application Centers to ensure global dissemination of new technologies and trends and facilitates the dissemination of regional learnings to all CAC’s.

• Leverages advanced experience in chemistry and formulation of various types of personal care products (hair, skin, sun care and others), knowledge of polymers, specialty functional additives for specific benefits.

• Demonstrates and uses knowledge of colloidal chemistry and surfactant principles.

• Initiates new R&D projects and leads their successful progression through the stage gate process.

• Implements state of the art data analytic and statistical tools for Personal Care data generation, analysis, and mining.

• Screens new chemical entities to fulfill a variety of needs in the Personal Care arena.

• Designs and performs non-routine testing on both existing products in new applications, and new products in existing applications.

• Manages project workflow through the laboratory, including project oversight for one or more Technologists.

• Coordinates the flow of work to other laboratories, including the CAC’s and external contract laboratories as needed.

• Creates presentations and reviews completed work, key results & business implications with colleagues and management.

• Presents results externally at industry/functional conferences, as appropriate.

• Maintains current awareness of the chemical literature, including the Personal Care trade association publications.

• Documents all work in a timely organized manner and obtains patents on intellectual property as it is developed.

Job Requirements

• PhD degree in Chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or Engineering is a plus.

• 10+ years industrial research experience in the Personal Care arena is required.

• Minimum five years of experience in personal care laboratory position, formulating end products in hair care, skin care, sun care, deodorants and other related fields and testing new technologies.

• Ability to learn new chemistries and applications requirements quickly.

• Broad experience across multiple Personal Care applications and technologies.

• Highly self-motivated, with a results-oriented mentality.

• Strong cross functional team player with demonstrated successes in new product development activities.

• Strong, demonstrated history of innovative thinking.

• Demonstrated knowledge of structure-property relationships in small organic molecules.

• Strong knowledge of Personal Care formulating.

• Experience mentoring/coaching /directing a small team of lab workers, including project delegation, prioritization, etc.

• Excellent problem solving skills and versed in statistical methods.

• Strong documentation and communication skills: lab notebook, research reports, invention disclosures, management and external presentations all required.

• Current ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis.
