Job Details: CREDIT RISK TEAM LEAD FIRST LINE OF DEFENSEWHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?This colleague is responsible for managing and directing the daily activities of a team of Credit Risk Review Officers supporting the First Line of Defense in examining the Bank’s diversified consumer and commercial loan portfolios for adherence to bank and regulatory standards. This may include, but not limited to, personnel performance management, planning and scheduling, overseeing the completion of independent reviews of designated loan portfolios to proactively identify and correct any potential credit and underwriting risks. Develops and recommends the 1LOD credit portfolio strategies to improve portfolio efficiency across multiple lines of businesses. Analyzes and evaluates the quality of the loan portfolios and recommends appropriate internal controls and procedures to ensure successful audit results. Provides internal training and technical guidance to colleagues promoting full adherence to, compliance with, CNB policies and procedures. Assists with portfolio reviews and audits, and responds to examination results with timely correction of identified areas of risk. This position also serves as an internal advisor to 1LODs to identify, recommend and effect process changes regarding credit risk management activities, regulatory issues related to credit risk, credit policy, and general credit underwriting guidelines; identifies current or potential problems regarding the assessment of credit risk and the administration of Bank credit/loan exposure; analyzes and monitors the quality of various retail and commercial credits that represent the wide range of credit products offered by the Bank. Evaluates Credit Policies/Credit Process and assures that proper credit controls are in place to fully satisfy safety and soundness standards established by Bank regulators; monitors adherence to such polices and validates that exceptions are adequately identified, fully justified and properly approved.WHAT WILL YOU DO?• Oversees and manages workflow and priorities in conjunction with or in the absence of the Manager. Determines and assigns Credit Risk Review Officers to team and work assignments based on experience, availability, and portfolio complexity and size.• Guides and assists the Credit Risk Review Officers and line units in identifying, recommending and effecting process changes regarding credit risk management activities, regulatory statues, credit policy and general credit underwriting guidelines to avoid potential issues or inaccurate risk ratings.• Reviews reports and portfolios to ensure proper grading, accrual status, collection activities and acceptable credit standards are maintained and that all loans conform to established Bank policy.• Leads large, complex credit risk reviews, prepares final reports and conducts meetings with 1LOD Division Credit Managers and senior executives.• Work with designated Credit Manager(s) to establish portfolio credit risk management performance guardrails and evaluate performance, utilize sensitivity analysis, stress testing, market trend, and other analytical methodologies to anticipate any credit trends or deterioration and obtain insights into portfolio performance and market opportunities• Collaborate with Division Risk Manager(s) and 1LOD Credit Risk Review Manager in creating and delivering presentations for senior management that include portfolio activities, analytics of risk, performance, emerging trends and opportunities• Coordinate the completion of risk mitigating actions and providing status updates of open/closed issues to senior management, 2LOD and 3LOD risk management functions.• Conduct QA/QC testing, validation and reporting on the performance of risk mitigating controls (e.g. if policies and procedures are being followed, if sign off limits are being exceeded, if EDD guidelines are being followed, etc.)• Identifies, recommends and effects process changes as related to credit risk management activities, regulatory statutes, credit policy and general credit underwriting guidelines.• Interprets and evaluates Bank Credit Policy and assures that proper credit controls are in place to appropriately manage credit risk. Monitors adherence to such policies and validates that exceptions are adequately identified, fully justified and properly approved.• Acts as internal advisor/partner to CNB’s line units regarding loan and credit matters and provides guidance in areas that require further development.• Maintains awareness of the current regulatory/industry trends impacting the Bank’s credit areas.• Promotes teamwork within the department to ensure that knowledge and experience is shared among team members.• Attend various committee and divisional portfolio meetings to keep apprised of existing and emerging risks.• Builds and maintains Credit Risk related communications with line units regarding loan and credit matters and offers guidance for areas that require further development.• Monitors performance, gives on-going performance feedback and conducts effective performance appraisals. Trains, coaches, counsels and provides general direction and guidance to Credit Risk Review Officers and/or other direct report staff.• Develops and motivates team members, identifies staff development needs and provides educational/training opportunities.• Complies fully with all Bank Operational and Credit policies and procedures as well as all regulatory requirements (e.g. Bank Secrecy Act, Know Your Client, Community Reinvestment Act, Fair Lending Practices, Code of Conduct, etc.).• Seeks out and attends sufficient training opportunities to enhance and maintain credit risk assessment skills, and management and supervisory skills.• Responsible and accountable for appropriate quality controls related to the financial products the bank provides, the services the bank delivers, and the processes employed• All City National products, financial solutions and services are to be provided ethically and with integrity in a manner that is consistent with the client-first culture and values embodied in City National’s PRIDE statement.WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEEDMust-Have*• Bachelor’s Degree Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics or related field• Minimum 5 years of experience in a banking environment or risk management consulting or in the financial services industry in risk related roles• Minimum 5 years of management experience and working with senior level executives or regulators• Minimum 5 years of experience influencing senior level executives or regulatorsSkills and Knowledge• A thorough understanding of analyzing various types of credits.• Must have proven management and supervisory skills and be able to lead, motivate and promote a client focused, consultative work environment.• Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal/written communication skills and strong project management skills.• Experience consulting with senior management on various credit-related issues.• Thorough knowledge and operational skills in the use of personal computers and various software packages, including Excel and Word.*To be considered for this position you must meet at least these basic qualificationsThe preceding job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
