MIMG Lecturer_FY 2022-2023

Position: Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UCLA (2022-2023).

This is a one-year, full-time appointment, with potential for an extended appointment following a favorable performance review after the first year.

Duties: Teach upper-division courses in the microbiology field during the 2022-2023 academic year. Courses may include the following, and lecturer may also be assigned additional courses according to the instructional needs in the department and in conformity with departmental lecturer workload policies.

* 5-unit Course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) in microbiology or virology courses and 4-unit courses that focus on the analysis and interpretation of data obtained during the requisite CURE course.
* 3-unit fundamental microbiology laboratory course for pre-professional students focusing on experimental techniques of microbiology, with emphasis on cultivation and characterization of bacteria. Laboratory exercises include light microscopy, quantitative techniques, and identification methods.
* 4-unit introductory microbiology lecture course on the historical foundations of microbiology; introduction to bacterial structure, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, and ecology.
* 4-unit medical microbiology lecture course for nursing students, focusing on and introduction to biology of microbial pathogens, their role in development of human immune response, and presentation of symptoms and disease caused by microbial infections.
* 2-unit seminar courses in scientific analysis and communication in which students read and discuss scientific articles and give presentations similar to laboratory meeting or research symposium talks.

For the laboratory courses: work with instructional laboratory staff to acquire, prepare, and distribute supplies for experiments, organize instructional materials for course, prepare and present lectures related to the experiments, write and grade exams and/or grade student assignments, supervise student work in the laboratory setting, facilitate computer-assisted learning activities in class, regularly meet with and oversee teaching assistants (TAs), and maintain office hours.

For non-laboratory courses: organize instructional materials for course, prepare and present lectures, write and grade exams, coordinate activities for discussion sections, regularly meet with and oversee TAs, and maintain office hours.

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in the biological sciences is required, and knowledge of microbiology is preferred. Also preferred is a demonstrated familiarity with evidence-based teaching practices for undergraduates at the university level and experience with laboratory instruction in the biological sciences. Level of appointment and salary commensurate with qualifications, experience, and duties.
