POSITION SUMMARY: Works in the direct interment/entombment of the deceased, or disinterment/disentombment of remains. Trims memorials and monuments on cemetery grounds. Operates the backhoe or other equipment. Maintains cemetery grounds and buildings under the direction and supervision of the Cemetery Manager, Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor. Full time position requires 40 hours per week. Overtime is required as necessary. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work. Sets up crypts for entombment/inurnments services, cleans crypt, sets chairs, seals shutters with cement, places marble/granite shutters back. Installs flower vases, plaques, religious relief, crypt lights and photo ceramics on crypt shutters. Also removes marble shutters for inscription. Cares for damage marble shutters and ensures the marble shutters are secured with the rosettes for safety. Removes flower room and vases. Prunes, fertilizes and waters the grounds. Ensures that crypt, niche, corridors and all areas around mausoleum buildings maintained and secured. Verifies Burial Permits, Inscription Order, and Memorial Permits for accuracy of locations and names. Cleans automobiles and equipment. Cleans office, mausoleum chapel, sacristy, basement and performs janitorial maintenance. Gathers and removes trash. Acts as funeral attendant; assists priests, patrons and funeral directors as necessary. Assists in the liturgy preparation as requested to include sacristan duties. Maintains good personal appearance; conducts self in a manner befitting funerals and respect for the dead. Responsible for safe and careful handling of all cemetery property and equipment; makes certain of its proper use and security. Makes certain that equipment is in good operating condition to ensure safety. Makes certain all equipment is clean and stored properly; informs Supervisor of any needed maintenance or repairs to equipment, or buildings. Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Any combination of experience and education likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically: General education sufficient to understand and observe written and oral instructions, directions and safety rules Previous experience in grounds-care helpful. Training in mausoleum maintenance and equipment, lift safety — all on the job training. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Have an understanding of the various urns for sizes. Liturgy preparation and coordination of sacramental services. Application of training in procedures and safety practices relative to entombment/inurnment and disentombments/disturnments. Skills in: Interpersonal relations. Acquiring necessary skills from on-the-job training. Safe and efficient use of required machinery and equipment. Ability to: Complete job on own after initial instruction from Supervisor. Write, read and follow instructions. Lift heavy objects and equipment. Lift objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted and be able to lift heavier objects with the aid of other grounds workers. Handle crypt set-ups cement shutter and marble shutter carefully. Operate standard equipment for mausoleum. Physical and Environmental Requirements Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Sit for a sustained periods of time on a daily basis. Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping and walking. Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, waist and arms.
