A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.


APCH COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

A Place Called Home will be mandating COVID-19 vaccines for our staff. Consistent with our mission and values, and the duty to provide and maintain a workplace free of recognized hazards, A Place Called Home (“APCH”) has adopted this policy to safeguard the health and well-being of our staff and our families, members and their families, volunteers, vendors, and others who spend time on our campus, and the community, from the risks associated with COVID-19. All new hires must provide proof of their first dose of the vaccine on the first day of employment, if not fully vaccinated, and will have 30 days from their date of hire to complete their COVID-19 vaccination and submit proof of completion to the organization’s HR department.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Educational Services Assistant Manager – High School, the Math Academic Assistant will provide support and assistance to our Teen and Young Adults in Mathematics. The Academic Assistant will be at the front-line for member safety and well-being. The Academic Aide will translate mission, policy, and R.E.A.C.H practice into a direct application for members.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and implement engaging one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions for teen members and entry-level college students in areas of high school and introductory college-level mathematics in person and online (via Zoom), which includes but is not limited to Beginning Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra through Calculus, Statistics, or other areas of theoretical or applied mathematics

  • Tutor members individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests, while modeling effective learning techniques and academic persistence

  • Help obtain accurate report cards and transcripts records according to departmental or agency needs

  • Provide classroom management and as-needed homework assistance for Homework Drop -in and maintain accurate tutoring records according to departmental or agency needs

  • Assist members in identifying high school and APCH resources to ensure academic and personal success

  • Help to develop or maintain essential academic skill such as learning techniques, positive study habits, and study skills with individuals and in the classroom

  • Communicate with staff instructors and Education Services Assistant Manager for High School to identify and best meet the academic and/or learning needs of each member

  • Work in a team with Educational Services Assistant Manager and other academic assistants to create individual academic plans and schedule academic support

  • Assist with the tracking of members’ academic progress, ensuring that members are on track to graduate from high school and have the option of going to college

  • Regularly maintain their online presence via responding to emails, online tutoring requests, and utilizing/editing their schedule on our Virtual Programs Hub

  • During the summer, an academic assistant may engage members in a class

  • Contribute to accomplish the Education Services department mission and goals

Other Responsibilities

  • Address student behavior appropriately and following the approach adopted by the agency

  • Complying with the agency’s legal mandate to report suspicions of abuse

  • Assist with the supervision of members during program hours

  • Attend all required program meetings and professional development

  • Serve as a mentor and role model for members

  • Adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards and values at all times

  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Education/Training/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or currently in college working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

  • Experience working with teen and young adult population


Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in a dynamic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center

  • Walking, standing required on a daily basis

  • Sitting and use of hands/vision for computer work for extended periods of time

  • Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally

  • Able to communicate and convey accurate information
