Boeing Phantom Works creates the next generation products and services for the Boeing Defense, Space & Security business and is currently looking for a Lead Communication System Engineer to join their team in El Segundo, CA. 

We work with proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space.  Phantom Works focuses on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-focused technologies for a variety of customers.  Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.

We are seeking a Lead Communication System Engineer with experience in satellite communication systems to work in a rapid development environment. This engineer will participate in all phases of the system development life cycle, including architecture development, requirements definition, analysis and decomposition, software and hardware system design, algorithm design, risk management, integration, test, and operations . The successful candidate will be leading system level communication design, development, verification, and operations activities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead communication architecture design, development, requirements definition, interface definition, analysis, functional decomposition, and CONOPS activities for space communication architectures.

  • Lead communication trade studies and briefings.

  • Collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Lead communication verification, validation, integration and test planning and execution (including functional validation as well as formal requirements sell-off).

  • Lead risk reduction activities and issue resolution.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. A final U.S. Top Secret Clearance Pre-Start is required

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.

  • 5+ years of experience with communications design, analysis, development, and verification.

  • 5+ years of experience in RF, digital signal processing (DSP), and/or optical communications.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with digital/RF communications hardware and lab equipment.

  • Experience with Model Based Engineering tools and languages.

  • Experience in rapid prototyping activities with small spacecraft.

Typical Education & Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only.  Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Summary pay range: $128,350 – $173,650
