ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 26 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS’ directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of $6.2 billion.
Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County’s 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings.

DEFINITION:
Performs semi-skilled work assisting journey or higher-level workers in sheet metal, machinist, millwright, and welding activities in fabrication, assembly, installation, alteration, maintenance, or repair work using hand tools, power tools, machines and equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Performs a variety of arduous tasks such as lifting, reaching and frequently working on scaffolding and overhead structures to assist in fabricating or repairing metal objects.
Grinds or files seams, joints, and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.
Assists in taking and recording measurements.
Assists in fabricating articles of metal.
Assembles brackets and reinforcements.
Heats, bends, and cuts metals to desired shape and size.
Maintains tools and equipment in serviceable condition.
Marks lines and holes with a prick punch as guides for cutting, drilling, and forming sheet metal.
Helps erect and remove scaffolding.
Assists in the overhaul, maintenance, and repair of a variety of machinery and equipment, involving dismantling, installing new parts, and reassembling.
Steam cleans, lubricates, and services machinery and equipment.
Perform routine work using lathes and other machine shop tools as assigned.
Builds and attends forge fire.
Assists in fabricating or repairing metal objects, employing welding techniques.
Cleans work and shop areas.
Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.
Prepares metal parts for welding.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option I: One year’s experience assisting in welding, machine shop, or sheet metal work..
Option II: Completion of 600 hours of instruction in welding, machine shop, or sheet metal courses in an industrial education curriculum* in a high school, college, the armed forces of the United States, or other recognized school**.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicants driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
PHYSICAL CLASS IV:
Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
VISION: Keen color perception.

*In order to receive credit for courses completed, you must include a legible photocopy of the official transcripts or certificate of completion to verify course work which shows the area of specialization with your application at the time of filing.
**Recognized school is defined as an approved agency including but not limited to agencies such as Southern California Sheet Metal J.A.T.C and Southern California Welding Training & Testing Center.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an interview which will assess Job Preparation, Knowledge and Skills, Oral Communication and Interpersonal Effectiveness , weighted 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an “as-received” basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
