We are also closely affiliated with the University Of Kentucky Department Of Neurology, who enables our neurologists with the opportunity to apply for a faculty appointment at UK.
Opportunity Specifics The Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARH) is a not-for-profit health system serving 350,000 residents across Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia.
Operating 10 hospitals, multi-specialty physician practices, home health agencies, HomeCare Stores and retail pharmacies, ARH is the largest provider of care, single largest employer in southeastern Kentucky and the third largest private employer in southern West Virginia.
According the Appalachia Regional Commission (ARC), a regional economic development agency established by the US Congress in 1965, the 25,000 square mile region that ARH serves contains one the highest concentrations of economically distressed counties in the United States.
The catchment population is encompassed by the 11-state region widely known as the ‘Stroke Belt’ or ‘Stroke Alley’ based on the unusually high incidence of stroke and other forms of cardiovascular disease.
According to the ARC, high death rates from stroke appear to cluster primarily in Eastern Kentucky, Southern West Virginia and Southeastern Ohio.
Other pervasive health challenges include diabetes (triple the national average), lung cancer, colorectal cancer, obesity, mental illness and incidence of drug dependency.
Unusually prevalent neurological disorders in addition to stroke, include Huntington’s disease, Myasthenia Gravis and undiagnosed epilepsy.
The population is culturally prone to a poor diet, prescription drug dependence and sedentary life style.
It is especially pertinent to note that the area is considered by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services as Medically Underserved.
Thus in cooperation with the US Department State, Immigration Services and Homeland Security, holders of J-1 and H-1B visas may be considered for eligibility to waive the requirement to return to the country of last permanent residence for a period of time prior to applying for a Green Card.
The opportunity, located at the Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center in Hazard, KY (ARH-Hazard) is ideal for the mission oriented neurologist driven to treat complex neurologic disorders and improve the overall health of patients in an area where neurologic care is sorely lacking.
As a result, the incoming neurologist will routinely treat cases of such complexity that is rarely seen in other areas of the US, due in part to the successful 1-800-ARH-DOCS program that enables primary physicians in remote areas to consult with an ARH specialist.
Neurologists with training and interests consistent with general neurology will find a supportive and collegial environment consisting of 100 close-knit interdisciplinary oriented physicians.
Approximately 60% of the incoming neurologist’s clinical service will be dedicated to the high acuity inpatient consult service at ARH-Hazard with an average patient census of 15-18.
The remaining clinical service will be in outpatient clinics adjacent to the hospital or at routinely scheduled outreach clinics located in nearby community locations.
Average full day clinics consist of 4 new and 10 follow up patients.
Neurologists with subspecialty training and interests in specific areas will realize large opportunities for clinical growth, including Stroke Administer TPA individually or via consult with UK Stroke Network Access available Doppler ultrasound technologies Achieve Primary Stroke Center Certification and regional stroke referral status Endovascular Perform diagnostic angiograms in onsite angiosuite with bi-plane Interact with a UK Neurosurgeon during routinely scheduled clinics Hospitalist Develop a dedicated inpatient neurology service Rehabilitation Enhance inpatient rehabilitation service to treat a wide array of stroke patients EEG Read routine EEGs from Psychiatric inpatient, ED, ICU and general wards Treat adult and pediatric patients including first onset seizure & diagnosed epilepsy Movement Disorders Treat a large backlog of Parkinson’s Disease cases Treat the genetic propensity to Huntington’s Disease Treat patients using Botox Therapy Treat a large backlog of acute Myasthenia Gravis cases Read routine EMGs Interventional Pain Perform lumbar puncture procedures on degenerative spine and other disorders Treat patients in the impending Level 3 Trauma Center Medical Center Overview The Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center (Hazard-ARH) is a 350-bed, acute-care hospital with an adjacent psychiatric hospital, the ARH Psychiatric Center, with 100 beds is the designated State acute mental health facility for a 21-county region in Eastern Kentucky.
Hazard-ARH also serves as a regional tertiary referral center for southeastern KY and WV.
Quaternary cases are referred to the University of Kentucky, Lexington.
Hazard ARH also features an Accredited Chest Pain Center supported by open and interventional cardiac surgery; Level II Nursery, Accredited Cancer Center, Accredited Breast Center, Inpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy Specialties and a Sleep Lab.
Hazard ARH also participates in the Joint Commission Certified University of Kentucky Neurology Stroke program via the UK Stroke Affiliate Network of 25 affiliate community hospitals spanning Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.
The UK Stroke Affiliate Network equips Hazard ARH neurologists with the ability to provide better emergent care to patients through direct access to UK attending stroke neurologists, including immediate administration of TPA as appropriate within the guidelines of UK Neurology protocol.
In broader terms, the UK Stroke Affiliate Network enables Hazard ARH neurologists to better educate their community about ways to minimize the risk of stroke through lifestyle changes that include managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels and stopping tobacco use.
A recently completed $47 million construction project included expansion of the Hazard ARH ICU to a total of 32 beds, and preparation for new service lines including a wound center with hyperbaric chamber and an interventional pain clinic located at a conveniently located ‘medical mall ’.
The fully renovated former Walmart location was designed to enhance the outpatient experience through a casual and disarming atmosphere.
The renovated medical mall includes various specialty clinics dedicated to VA, psychiatry, eye center and OBGYN patients.
The medical mall includes full imaging capabilities and has 20,000 square feet available for growth.
Academic Affiliations The incoming neurologist will have the opportunity to be considered for a faculty appointment with the University of Kentucky Department of Neurology.
The department is the cornerstone of the University of Kentucky’s Neuroscience Program and currently has 30 full time faculty with primary appointments and 15 faculty with secondary appointments.
Dr.
Larry Goldstein is the newly appointed Professor and Chair of Neurology.
He is a nationally recognized stroke neurologist, former Chair of AHA Stroke Council, and spokesman for American Stroke Association with more than 650 publications in his career.
UK Neurology faculty, regardless of location are supported and encouraged to pursue scholarly goals and interests ranging from recruitment into clinical trials, write articles for peer-review and pursue NIH grants.
