Liberty Mutual has an exciting opportunity for a highly dedicated and qualified attorney to join our Legal Department’s Legal Strategic Services (LSS) as Counsel. Your core responsibilities will include involvement in innovative external law firm oversight and management, including collaboration on and analysis and handling of law firm rate and pricing requests. Your work will help to drive legal quality, performance, and cost management across the enterprise. As Counsel, you will provide legal advice and carry out actions which have an impact upon the rights, privileges and responsibilities of the Company while maintaining high standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate across LSS outside counsel management and pricing counsel to address all aspects of external law firm rate and pricing requests
Maintain an explicit understanding of external law firm panel management strategies, development and convergence efforts, as well as pricing strategies and approaches, in order to best address firm rate and pricing requests
Conduct appropriately comprehensive reviews and analyses of existing qualitative and quantitative performance results, advanced metrics and predictive analytics, and related information concerning external law firms to assess their rate and pricing requests
Actively utilize tools and technologies to interpret relevant performance and pricing metrics related to external law firm rate and pricing requests, as well as to identify any litigation management/handling improvement opportunities for such firms which may inform decisions
Assess available Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) timekeeper metrics and information for external law firms requesting rate and pricing changes
Develop and/or build upon knowledge of law firm handling and compliance expectations via Liberty Mutual’s Litigation Guidelines and Protocols in order to assess a firm’s status and usage on a legal panel
Work with the company’s Strategic Business Units and Home Office legal departments to achieve mutual objectives relative to outside counsel panel and spend management
Provide qualitative and data-driven recommendations to key stakeholders addressing external law firm rate and pricing requests as well as any identified litigation management/handling improvement and DEI timekeeper opportunities for such firms
Strategize and participate with LSS counsel in external law firm negotiations to address rate and pricing requests
Continuously improve and ensure effective and efficient processes are in place to manage, act on, and track external law firm rate and pricing requests
Enhance experience in managing external law firms through firm segmentation, standard work and benchmarking
Build expertise in law firm oversight approaches, including processes and actions to ensure best in class qualitative and quantitative performance of outside counsel
Maintain legal knowledge and monitor key developments in the law
Travel: Virtual with some travel dependent upon company guidelines

Qualifications:

Completion of law school with J.D. or L.L.B. and admission to the bar of at least one United States jurisdiction
Generally requires a minimum of 3+ years as a practicing attorney with related litigation and legal services experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Considerable law firm and/or litigation management expertise is critical
Strong metrics, business analytics and systems acumen
Extensive knowledge of litigation practices and procedures
Experience leveraging technology, including dashboards/Power BI platforms
Comprehensive understanding of insurance principals, claims and operations

Requirements include excellent oral and written communication skills, client focus, managing multiple priorities, attention to detail and demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis of legal issues. Within certain practice groups, may require in-depth knowledge of a specialized area of law. Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States required.
Generally requires at least three years` experience as a practicing attorney.
