The Lead Field Technician (Tech) is responsible for leading a team of Field Technicians that balance bikes, clean stations, perform station tech work, bicycle maintenance and perform other essential tasks for operating the bike share system. The Lead Field Tech runs a cohesive team that prioritizes safety, communication, attention to detail, and sound decision making. They are a point of contact for their team and communicate policy changes, training, and aggregate feedback from their team to their Operations Manager. Additionally, they assist with station maintenance and repair, bike repair and other tasks that go beyond the role of a normal Field Tech. This position requires the ability to multi-task, establish priorities, complete assignments thoroughly and accurately, as well as communicate effectively with their team. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of Field Technicians and/or Station Cleaners.
  • Perform duties associated with Field Technicians on regular basis. 
  • Motivate the team to perform safely, efficiently, and accurately and give feedback where appropriate. 
  • Work under the guidance of Operations Manager to identify, develop, and implement improvements. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Open and close warehouse. 
  • Drive a Ford Transit or equivalent extended wheelbase van to complete daily tasks.
  • Ride an e-bike/e-trike occasionally to perform daily task
  • Distribute bicycles throughout the system to ensure bike stations are appropriately stocked.
  • Collect bicycles requiring in-shop repair work.
  • Inspect and ensure bike stations are safe, clean, and operating properly
  • Assist with bike and bike station deployment and redeployment. 
  • Interact with bike share passholders and the public in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Communicate with Dispatch to give updates on conditions at stations and in coverage area. 
  • Perform regular in-field monthly safety checks on bicycles and in-shop bicycle maintenance.
  • Maintain stations (troubleshooting, replacing parts, swapping batteries, cleaning) in accordance with company policy and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  • Maintain and ensure team maintains frequent and clear communication between Dispatchers and Station Techs.
  • Complete service records for all work performed in accordance with company SOP’s.
  • Give and receive feedback to other team members. 
  • Provide assistance with in warehouse bicycle repairs, builds, and refurbishments. 
  • Write team schedule.
  • Approve payroll and time-off requests for direct reports.  
  • Lead the hiring and training of new team members.
  • Conduct Annual Performance Reviews for direct reports.
  • Develops team to improve professional goals and meet or exceed performance expectations.
  • Communicate with Operations Manager and Fleet & Facility Coordinator about van issues. 
  • Ensure that Monthly Vehicle Inspections and other vehicle maintenance for fleet is completed.
  • Receive training from the Head Mechanic, Head Station Tech, and Deputy Operations Director on current best practices, procedures, and repairs. Train the team on those procedures, and ensure accountability and follow up.
  • Frequently collaborate with the site Lead Mechanic, and Lead Station Tech on issues that affect staff. 
  • Audit operating procedures, striving to improve effectiveness and safety of staff and fleet.
  • Audit driver safety through Geotab, system metrics, Slack, Fiix, and feedback from Dispatch and Dispatch Manager.
  • Work with Dispatch to set up best communication practices and task management.

Daily Tasks: 

  • Check Fiix for any assigned, pending, or late tasks 
  • Check in with Dispatch for direction on prioritization for balancing, station maintenance, and other assigned duties and tickets. 
  • Clean stations when balancing or working in the field 
  • When out in the field, quick inspection of station (ex: Check Dock, digitizer, CC reader, etc…) 
  • Meet with each direct report to check in, give and receive feedback, and provide direction.
  • Check and respond to email, ensure information is shared for direct reports.
  • Ride e-bike/e-trike occasionally to perform daily tasks

Weekly Tasks:

  • Audit Fiix and Slack to ensure Drivers are following established procedures
  • Take inventory of all supplies
  • Participate in weekly meetings
  • Approve Payroll
  • Conduct one-on-one meeting with each member of Field Tech team

Monthly Tasks:

  • Re-order supplies for the team
  • Audit the field work of each team member and give feedback
  • Assist Bike Mechanics with Monthly Bike Inspections
  • Overview of Fiix numbers and Goals with site Operations Manager
  • Participate in group meetings

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Valid driver license and clean driving record that passes insurance requirements for the company.
  • Ability to understand and learn technical aspects of the software and the hardware capabilities and needs of a bike share system. 
  • Excellent mechanical skills, and some experience in bicycle maintenance and/or willingness to learn. 
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude. 
  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn new software. 
  • Strong leadership, communications and interpersonal skills; ability to motivate a team to perform effectively, efficiently, safely while finding joy and meaning in the work.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and can deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.  
  • Organized thinker, with the ability to self-direct under a high-pressure environment with changing deadlines. 
  • A strong sense of safety for everyday tasks. 
  • Sense of humor.

Physical Requirements and Special Demands:

  • Frequently bend, stoop, and twist throughout the day
  • Requires the ability to regularly lift objects up to 50+ lbs and carry objects of this weight for distances up to 150 feet
  • Requires the ability to perform work while standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Repetitive motion required of the writs, hands, or fingers occasionally throughout the work day.
  • May require working and riding a bicycle outdoors in various temperatures including rain, cold and heat conditions.
  • Comfortable driving, stopping and working in busy outdoor urban environments. 
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with company and department policy.
  • This position may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week.
