Chief Privacy and Data Security Officer

UCLA Health seeks anexperienced, highly knowledgeable privacy and information governance leader tojoin one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the nation as ChiefPrivacy and Data Security Officer (CPDO).  In this role you will report to the Chief Compliance Officer, UCLAHealth Sciences and will strategically and operationally lead the development,implementation and management of robust and effective Privacy andInformation/Data Governance Programs for UCLA Health Sciences.

With four award-winninghospitals, a top 10 school of medicine, and dozens of primary care practices,specialty practices, urgent care centers and other locations throughout metroLos Angeles, the CPDO will have the opportunity to ensure the highest standardsof integrity and accountability across a complex health system, developing andleading best practices in effective privacy, information/data governance andcompliance programs.


With broad, strategic responsibilities, the Chief Privacy and DataSecurity Officer (CPDO) position requires an individual with exemplaryleadership and relationship skills at the level of being a role model for peersand employees.  The ideal candidate is astrategic leader, consultative and partnership-oriented in approach who willensure compliance with all relevant and applicable laws, regulations,contractual requirements, standards and practices for all relevantstakeholders, both internal and external to the organization, includingregulatory entities. The CPDO must also be an individual who will embrace thecultural values of the institution, including CICARE and the CulturalNorth Star.

UCLA Health is seeking an individual with:

-Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Additional relevant graduate degree(s) (e.g. Juris Doctor, M.B.A., Master’s or PhD) preferred, but not required. CIPP, CIPP/IT/IS, Healthcare Privacy Compliance and/or other relevant privacy, information governance or data governance certification highly preferred.

-Minimum of 8 years of broad-based and extensive privacy, information governance and/or data governance operational, compliance, legal and/or risk management (GRC) experience required, preferably in the health insurance and/or healthcare industries. Prior in-house operational, compliance, legal and/or risk management experience strongly preferred, particularly at a large- or medium-sized health systems. California-specific privacy knowledge and experience preferred, but not required.

-Minimum of 5 years of work experience in a substantive managerial/leadership role.

-Understanding of healthcare, health insurance and managed health care industries and organizations required.

-Substantive project management skills and experience required.

-Successful experience in designing, building and leading highly effective privacy, information/data governance and/or other such corporate governance (GRC) programs from scratch and/or significantly enhancing such programs strongly preferred.

-Industry subject matter expertise and wide-ranging knowledge of all relevant laws, regulations, contractual requirements, industry standards and best practices required. Understanding and knowledge of information/cyber security, IT (particularly healthcare IT) and data asset classification/ management preferred.

-Excellent partnership-, relationship-, consensus- and coalition-building skills; proven ability to successfully develop, foster and sustain high-performance cultures and highly engaged teams within and across departments and throughout the organization.

-Outstanding oral, listening and written communication skills.
