Chief Operating Officer

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm in Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.

Position Description: ICLC seeks a dynamic leader who is passionate about justice and combatting homelessness, to join ICLC’s Executive Leadership Team as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), serving as the Organization’s second in command, overseeing the Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, Finance, Programs, and Public Policy Teams. The COO does not have to be an attorney but will ensure effective and efficient day-to-day operations and lead organizational capacity building efforts, transformation initiatives, and change management.

The COO will oversee and support the critical aspects of ICLC’s work and day-to-day operations including:

  • Supervision of ICLC’s Chief Financial Officer, Chief Counsel & Director of Legal Services, Director of Administration, Director of Strategic Initiatives, and Senior Human Resources Manager.
  • Identify, research, and implement innovative projects designed to remove administrative burdens and enhance the effectiveness of our legal teams.
  • Develop and implement efficiencies to our service delivery model to adapt to growing staff, increased number of clients and referral sources, and ensuring high quality and client-centered legal representation.
  • Engage staff at all levels of the organization to better understand existing challenges and collaboratively develop solutions.
  • Serve as an integral part of ICLC’s Leadership Team and collaborate with the Directors and Supervising Attorneys to identify and pursue client-focused solutions to system barriers.
  • Represent ICLC and continue building relationships with external stakeholders, partners, funders, and government agencies.

Hiring Criteria: Demonstrated history of building and running successful teams. Candidate should have at least eight years of leadership experience in strategy and operations. Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent communication and negotiation skills. Innovative and solution-oriented. Sound financial and budget management experience in complex environments. Demonstrated understanding of human resources and personnel challenges growing organizations face. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and collaboratively. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet deadlines.
