Chief of Staff to the Dean-David Geffen School of Medicine

Responsibilities

Take on a high-impact role as “Chief of Staff” to the Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (DGSOM), one of the nation’s most prestigious and influential centers of medical academic excellence and clinical research.

You will report directly to the Dean of the DGSOM and work closely with Dean’s senior leadership team to ensure effective decision making and execution of organizational strategies across the organization. This will involve the daily and long-term alignment of resources, operations and priorities while ensuring constructive collaboration across a wide range of interdependent departments, including Finance & Administration, Faculty Affairs, EDI, Research, Strategic Planning, IT and Educational Affairs. 

As Chief of Staff, you will:

  • Serve as the Dean’s trusted advisor
  • Define and support DGSOM’s strategies, operations and business priorities
  • Oversee the Dean’s Office marketing and communications team, maintain a close partnership with UCLA health system’s Marketing & Communications department
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, advancement and communication of the Dean’s strategic priorities and initiatives based on clearly defined goals, metrics and implementation plans   
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the DGSOM’s Cultural North Star program, embedding our values throughout the education and research enterprise
  • Align stakeholders and leverage resources to drive high-priority initiatives
  • Oversee staff activities in the Dean’s Office while developing a culture of shared responsibility and accountability
  • Ensure constructive communication within the Dean’s Office and the School  
  • Serve as liaison to central administration
  • Provide thought leadership for the DGSOM Anti-racism Roadmap
  • Represent the Dean on health system, campus and community committees
  • Facilitate a variety of key stakeholder meetings
  • Prepare presentations for the Dean
  • Develop the Dean’s Annual Report

You will report directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine at UCLA DGSOM and work closely with Dean’s senior leadership team to ensure effective decision making and execution of organizational strategies across the organization with an overarching focus on supporting the development and implementation of critical organizational strategies across the organization. This will involve aligning the daily and long-term alignment of resources, operations and priorities while ensuring constructive collaboration across a wide range of interdependent departments, including Finance & Administration, Faculty Affairs, EDI, Research, Strategic Planning, IT and Educational Affairs.  

Qualifications

We’re seeking a highly motivated, collaborative and forward-thinking leader with:

  • Master’s degree in business administration, public administration/public affairs, biological sciences, health sciences, organizational development, law or equivalent strongly preferred, Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least five years of senior leadership experience in a large, complex health care organization, school of medicine or higher-education setting
  • Proven expertise in all higher education organizational functions
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence
  • Understanding of distributed decision-making processes
  • Outstanding communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
  • Ability to set clear priorities and execute on them
  • Ability to accept and provide honest, clear and constructive feedback
  • Ability to manage differing opinions and conflicting priorities within a unified mission
  • Ability to represent the Dean with authority when necessary
  • High level of ethics, integrity, discretion and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated change agent with strong commitment to process improvement
