The Design Engineer presents ideas to and communicates frequently with the Sr.

Director, Audi Design Loft and Top Management of AoA and Audi AG.

The Design Engineer also is responsible for coordinating activities and schedules with internal disciplines (e.g., CAD and Visualization).

This role is responsible for supporting the development of the brand direction and goals in close cooperation with the leadership of the Audi Design Loft.Role Responsibilities:Creative / Innovation – (70%)Develops feasible Exterior Design proposals from sketch into 3D.Engages in creative discussions with leadership to define and develop automotive projects (production/concept), incorporating creativity, and market/competition analysis.Executes automotive projects based on outcomes of production/concept discussions and leadership direction.Produces proposals which influence (Audi) Product and Design decision making, reflecting future trend analysis, market and competition analysis.Develops new product ideas for the Audi brand and presents to Audi Design Loft leadership, AoA leadership, and Audi AG leadership.Project Oversight – (20%)Takes a lead role in the life cycle of the design project, from concept through to program presentation or handoff.Coordinates activities and schedules with other studio disciplines (e.g.

strategy, engineering, design, CAD, visualization and fabrication) to ensure successful project completion within the required timeframe.Research and Strategy Involvement – (10%)Identifies and documents research and inspiration for the Audi Design team.Communicates new & relevant design trends to the Audi Design team.Utilizes market and competition analysis as a base for new product ideas.Ensures the successful application of design strategy into new product ideas.QualificationsExperience:5-8 years in the field of industrial designMinimum of 5 years in an Automotive OE studio
– in both Exterior Design Department and Interior Design Department and concept vehiclesEducation:Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive or Industrial DesignMaster’s Degree in Automotive or Industrial Design (desired)General Skills:Demonstrated analytical thinking – using logic and reasonExcellent communication skills – interpersonal, presentation and writtenDemonstrated conceptual thinking – creative and strategicWorkplace integration – joining people, processes or systemsExtensive knowledge and experience of OEM automotive engineering and executing pre-development stage of production and advanced concepts from satellite design operationsUnderstanding of multiple regional markets, especially the North American and Asian marketsAbility to comprehend automotive experiential technology and its foray into general consumer electronics and lifestyle industryExperience in vehicle packaging, human factors, interface, user-experience, and user behavior aspects in transportation designSpecialized Skills:Design DevelopmentDevelop visionary design concepts for studies or portfolio products, vehicle architectures and material development within the framework of frontloading activities, in collaboration with the technical advanced development functions, innovation management, scouting process and market research.Design innovative vehicle projects, derivatives, product upgrades and individual components/equipment considering company and product strategy, the global market requirements and the technical and qualitative framework conditions, such as modular construction, ergonomics and legislation.Ensure timely and functional feasibility of the assigned projects regarding design aesthetics, appearance, functional safety and (possible) production.Create design renderings/imagery using different drawing techniques as well as mood/material boards.Develop photorealistic visualization of two-dimensional designs and first three-dimensional virtual models using design software (Alias).Assess, improve, and implement into virtual or physical models, material boards, and components of design themes based on the technical vehicle package, consumer, and qualitative specifications.Continuously update and advance the Audi design language.Elaborate differentiation ranges within the framework of design strategy for model hierarchy and individualization of models.Synchronize viewing and processing of entire product families.Design ImplementationTransform design renderings/imagery into virtual and physical models and material concepts.Incorporate technical guidance and design guidance from internal and external CAD (and Clay) modelers during model transformation.Assess and improve design themes during the model phase.Detect problems and develop solutions for implementation in design models.Comply with provided development goals and ensure project milestones in terms of time and content.Support and optimize models during Design reviews.

Develop interface and architecture concepts in collaboration with other specialized departments.Present models and concepts to design team and management.Implement requests and recommendations from design team and management.Design SupportTake responsibility for projects encompassing a complete vehicle or an entire product family.Coordinate all project-related facets and support / guide employees involved in the project.Elaborate design goals when presented with complex and difficult tasks.Advance development of design in math/data in collaboration with Design Feasibility.Supervise design implementation in math and construction data for DKM, design check, concept vehicle, prototypes and production cars.Control data records to ensure design quality throughout the entire series development process up to program culmination.Elaborate design solutions with involved departments, transform in math/data and control within the framework of VR presentation or milling models.Create project briefings for internal and external customers.Design CommunicationCreate and implement design presentations of show cars and new production products for internal motivation events, press presentations, dealer presentations, and VIP guests.Present design concepts, design renderings/imagery and models internal communication purposes, launch of new models, press events and presentation of show cars.Conduct design demonstrations at events, exhibitions, and at universities.Elaborate differentiation ranges within the framework of design strategy for model hierarchy and individualization of models.Synchronize viewing and processing of entire product families.Innovative approach to presentation: Able to use video editing and production toolsCan model from his/her design renderings data sketch models in both Facets and Polygon CAD softwareKnowledge of CAD rendering for high quality renderingsKnowledge of animation tools in CAD software in order to demonstrate product functionality.Work Flexibility:Up to 25% of travel due to extensive contact to VW Group clients in GermanyWillingness to travel within short (3-4 days) noticeVolkswagen Group of America is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
