About the Role

We are looking for a Product & Regulatory Affairs (Associate Counsel/Counsel) to join our regulatory affairs team.  This role will be tasked with drafting insurance product policies, interacting with regulators to obtain approval of such policies, and coordinating product filings based on own strong insurance regulatory knowledge and input from business stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have deep insurance regulatory background with a consistent record of providing expert and practical advice on routine and complex insurance matters, including product design and implementation.

What You’ll Do 

  • Draft necessary legal documents, develop conclusions, and make recommendations regarding insurance products, including individual and group major medical (ACA), supplemental health insurance products, and self-funded insurance products
  • Draft and oversee insurance policy rate and form regulatory filings for such insurance products
  • Partner with insurance partners to pursue product approval by federal and state insurance regulators
  • Interact with insurance regulators, including in meetings and in writing
  • Draft and oversee responses to questions from federal and state regulatory agencies
  • Participate on product project teams to better understand business processes and goals and to provide inputs for regulatory requirements that may impact products and business
  • Stay updated on existing and changing federal and state regulations, standards, and guidance documents that may impact the company’s products and processes
  • Research and interpret regulations to apply to appropriate products
  • Facilitate strategic planning by developing and supporting regulatory plans for assigned products
  • Review and oversee marketing, legal and product documentation of the individual insurance products to assess compliance with applicable regulations and policies
  • Work closely with other members of the legal, actuarial, operational, and compliance teams
  • Liaise with outside counsel when necessary, including reviewing the engagement, work product and associated billings
  • Keep senior leaders informed on development and upcoming tasks, including timelines and assessment of likely success or risk

What You’ll Bring 

  • Must have a JD degree or equivalent and possess excellent academic credentials.

    Must be a member in good standing of the bar.

  • A minimum of 2-5 years’ experience working at a law firm or an insurance company focused on health insurance products or comparable experience at a law firm required
  • Strong knowledge of health care industry processes and regulations, particularly the Affordable Care Act, ERISA, HIPAA, and the federal and state agencies that regulate the industry
  • Must be able to scope a project and work backwards, setting timelines for deliverables
  • Must have strong organizational and teamwork skills
  • Must have sharp attention to detail in executing and reviewing work products to ensure the highest quality deliverables in the allotted timeframe
  • Strong communication skills (including writing and oral presentation), particularly legal analysis and persuasion, imperative
  • Must have the ability to handle pressure and prioritize multiple competing projects with many moving pieces in the face of ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Must understand and embrace the company’s mission to provide ‘health insurance the way it should be’
  • Must reside on West Coast or capable of working West Coast hours
