Veterinarian Technician

Essential Functions Performs initial physical exams on shelter animals, report findings to Shelter Wellness Manager, and document findings/treatment plan in PetPoint Draws blood and performs diagnostic testing including but not limited to fecal testing, mange testing, heartworm testing and feline leukemia testing Ability to vaccinate, insert microchips, give heartworm prevention and apply topical flea and tick products Maintains an accurate inventory of all supplies and restocks supplies as necessary, notifies manager if supplies need ordered Performs exams on patients in foster care and completes re-vaccinations as necessary Medicate shelter animals as necessary for illness Perform treatments as directed including, but not limited to; adminstering oral medications, medicated baths, and ear cleaning/flushing Maintain accurate information and record keeping Proper and effective “fear free shelter” animal handling Assist with examinations of animals scheduled for transport within 24-48 hours of depature Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position: High school or equivalent education; RVT/LVT preferred but not required At least 3 years veterinary technician experience, preferably in clinical as well as shelter environments Experience in medical record keeping and using appropriate veterinary medical terminology Excellent communication skills Organized and able to multitask well Highly motivated with professional attitude Knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior Aquire and possess a thorough understanding of, and dedication to, animal welfare issues and policies/philosophies of HSNT Ability to work independently and confidently using superior discretion and judgment Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions This position is regularly required to use hands to fingers, handle, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch The position holder must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without assistance, up to 80 pounds with assistance While performing the duties of this job this position may be exposed to animal odors or airborne particles The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud Working Conditions The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required by the individual.
