Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Special Working Conditions: Assigned work hours may be outside the standard business hours.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $3,717 – maximum $6,726 monthly.

Major Duties

Under general direction of the Dean, College of Arts & Humanities; the incumbent serves as the production technical and operational specialist for the University Theatre Complex, Edison Theater and Recital Hall, including oversight of the facility and scheduling for department and non-departmental events. Responsibilities include but are not limited to collaborating with other campus departments to secure space and promote events, provide a variety of technical specialties including stage and design, lighting configuration and operation, film/video set up and operation, and audio/music production. This incumbent will also coordinate complex projects involving difficult designs and materials and demonstrations; interface with on-campus and off-campus renters, venders and various users for multiple projects, and coordinate front-of-house services to ensure a smooth operation.

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor degree in Theatre Arts or related field

Required Experience: Five years of related work experience, and lead work direction.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree (i.e MFA) in Theatre Arts or related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of event and production, including, but not limited to: methods and problems in multiple production.
Production goals, themes, operations, and procedures necessary in order to translate design specifications, blueprints or drawings into costume, scene, lighting or sound production and effects.
Thorough knowledge, including the principles, practices and techniques of lighting, sound, counterweight, and other stage systems and equipment.
Directing and stage management, including the staging needs for productions requiring numerous costume and set changes.
Comprehensive knowledge of various historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty.
Thorough and in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects of construction, implementation, and operation of staging materials and effects in various production specialties.
Comprehensive knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to production support specialty and stage operations; ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
Thorough working knowledge of carpentry.
Thorough knowledge of basic electrical theory and usage related to audio and lighting effects and working of lighting,
sound and stage effect techniques, including the ability to improvise lighting, sound, stage property, and other stage effects.
Basic knowledge of costume techniques.

Abilities:
Oversee and coordinate the use of multiple facilities
Independently oversee production support projects, breaking segments into working unit that coincide with production needs; plan and designate work effectively and efficiently.
Work on complex projects and designs and to work with difficult materials and equipment,
including to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs.
Select and use complex specialized software programs.
Support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to production.

Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals at all levels within and outside the university.

Responsibilities

55% – Oversee and coordinate a wide variety of productions and events scheduled in the University Theatre Edison Theater or Recital Hall by on and off campus users. Duties include but not limited to a variety of departmental and non-departmental technical specialties, lighting, audio, stage set up, budget preparation, and interfacing with event staff, and providing lead work direction to students. Establish methods to maximize rental revenue while balancing other priorities, such as large lecture courses and events by other departments in the College

  • and in the University; provide cost estimation, assist with budget preparation and promote a positive customer experience while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

    20% – Oversee the University Theater, Edison Theater and Recital Hall scheduling by creating and establishing guidelines for each venue. Utilize the scheduling platform and master calendar to make the availability of these venues transparent to the larger campus community. Communicate rental rates to those who inquire about the space and provide labor information to the Procurement department.

    20% – Front-of-House Management, Maintain ticket software and update appropriately for each event; provide customer service to patrons by addressing any issues, questions or concerns; update marquee for each event. Coordinate front-of-house patron services and box office operation to ensure smooth production.

    5% – Other duties as assigned.
