Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Central Sterile Processing Technician is to prevent the growth and cross contamination of harmful microorganisms that will cause a negative effect for our patients, doctors, staff members, HPMC internal and external customers, and to themselves. This position accomplishes the primary responsibility by ensuring that all surgical instruments, scopes, power equipment, and sterilization containers are properly inventoried, decontaminated, inspected, assembled, packaged (containerized, wrapped, or peel packed), sterilized, and stored in the correct environment in a quality/time manner. Our main customers are Main Surgery, Labor and Delivery, and other areas that require sterile instrumentation.
- Performs duties as a CSPD tech independently, works proficiently without constant supervision and when competent helps train new employees.
- Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments, scopes, surgical power tools, and clinical equipment.
- Operates and troubleshoots cleaning equipment.
- Appropriately handles garbage, linen, and bio-hazardous materials.
- Maintains safety standards within the decontamination area.
- Consistently uses recipes (count sheets) to correctly assemble, protect, wrap containerize and/or peel package and label instruments. Identifies and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality.
- Knows and follows correct principles of sterilization. Selects appropriate sterilization methods.
- Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process is required. Performing HLD (high level disinfection) is required (will train).
- Contacts BIOMED if sterilizers are not functioning properly, informs manager of CSPD, and surgery. If a steam sterilizer fails a leak test the autoclave is taken out of service, and biomed is notified.
- Maintain a clean work area. Completes assigned housekeeping duties.
- Must build and have good rapport with both internal & external customers; polite and respectful.
- Must be able to use good judgment in handling personnel/customer situations.
- Is dependable, punctual and a self-starter.
- Sterile Processing Technician must be able to assemble 15 surgical instrumentation trays a day.
Minimum Education:

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications:
- 2 years experience with certification in sterile processing preferred but will allow up to six months to become certified if not certified upon a confirmed hire
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:
- Certification is preferred upon hiring as a Certified Sterile Processing Tech. or Certified Surgical Technician with two years minimum experience in Central Sterile Processing.
- If candidate has two years of experience and is a fit for HPMC but is not certified, then the candidate must accept as a condition of employment and continue employment with HPMC, to become certified within 6 months after hire.
- New central sterile processing grads with certification will be considered.
- Responsible to maintain certification.
- Accepted certification from: IAHCSMM or CBSPD; or a qualified certifying body upon verification is acceptable.
- BLS Card
- Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required (within 30 days of employment).
