Responsibilities
In this role, you will assist with training and supervisory duties of animal care personnel in the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, perform operational/husbandry duties, and conduct facility services/inspections.
Salary range: $27.19 – $35.88
Qualifications
Required:
- Working knowledge of the standards and guidelines of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Animal Welfare Act, and UCLA policies to insure proper and humane animal husbandry.
- Knowledge, skill, and ability in animal husbandry attested by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or equivalent at the LATG level.
- Ability to effectively communicate with people of varying degrees of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, peers, and subordinates.
- Ability to work independently under conditions of fluctuating workloads and to set priorities which reflect the relative importance of job duties.
- Knowledge of and skill in animal husbandry including safety precautions using AALAS manual & federal guidelines.
- Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing agents and their proper application to insure that a clean and healthful environment is maintained.
- Ability to lift feed bags up to 50 lbs., to handle animals up to 100 lbs., and to push racks up to 300 lbs.
- Skill in handling a variety of animal species in a variety of situations to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
- Computer, Microsoft Office and Skill in reading documents written in standard English and skill in using basic English words and phrases to follow the necessary policies and procedures as they apply to laboratory animal medicine.
- Ability to communicate with excellent oral and written skills
- Ability to write and maintain documents e.g. SOPs, working instructions, and provide training to the personnel in the areas.
- Ability to supervise husbandry staff at various levels.
Preferred:
- Skill in motivating others, stimulating people to effective action.
- Skill in para veterinary procedures to assist veterinarians and/or researchers.
- Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or working experience in similar positions and-or academic degrees (AA/AS, BA/BS, MBA, etc.) in Related Science Fields.
- Knowledge of University and DLAM procedures in order to effectively supervise, train, assess, and discipline staff.
