Mechanic – Diesel Engines

If you’ve worked as a mechanic for years or are newer to the field, you’ll find new opportunities and challenges working on Union Pacific’s expansive diesel locomotive fleet!

The goal as a member of this creative team is to ensure our locomotives are serviced safely, efficiently, in compliance with company and federal standards, so we’re back on the tracks to transport goods to our customers across North America!

Accountabilities
Inspect and service diesel locomotives fleet within compliance of company, federal, and industry standards
Diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other issues related to the locomotive mechanical system
Repair, replace or rebuild our locomotives and diesel engine components as needed
Efficiently operate equipment including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment, i.e.

forklifts, cranes and overhead hoists
Communicate technical information, job briefing information, job procedure recommendations and other work-related information with others verbally, through writing, telephone, radio, and intercom
Read and interpret information from diagrams, schematics, graphs and charts, and input into a computer as needed
Ensure all equipment or materials are available and ready for use as needed
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and efficiently handle controversy
Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Basic keyboarding skills
Basic mathematic skills
Valid driver’s license
Ability to read and understand all instructions including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents
Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances
Must have the following: 4 years of education or work experience (or a combination of the two) as a mechanic repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, diesels OR current journeyman’s mechanical card
Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
Candidates for this position must pass a pre-employment test in English before being allowed to interview.

The number of candidates who pass the test and are granted an interview is based upon hiring needs.

Preferred
An Associate’s degree in a mechanical related field
Certified and/or licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
Experience as a mechanic in other fields (e.g., military, aviation, nuclear, marine)
Experience welding or a welding certificate (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Experience working in an environment that requires you to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection
Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment (Consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
Completed a formal auto/diesel engine training program (e.g., training presented by a community college or trade/vocational school, or military)
Physical Requirements
Able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays; identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances and respond quickly to sounds
Able to occasionally perform overhead work for short periods of time
Able to remain standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
Able to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing
Must have normal color vision
Able to occasionally bend, stoop, and kneel, lift and carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs
Able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects; safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces
Work Conditions
Willing to work in confined and/or small spaces
Willing to work various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends
18 years of age or older
Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Work at heights of 18 feet or more

The union agreement dictates the pay rate and cannot be individually negotiated.

Monthly dues are the responsibility of the employee.
