Summary of Essential Job Duties: The HLA Technician I is a professional member of the HLA Laboratory staff who works under the direct supervision of the supervisory personnel. As much as ninety percent of the time is spent performing routine Processing of clinical samples, performing preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment, receiving and logging samples in the laboratory computer system, putting away patient samples in the inventory, supply inventory, ordering and putting away supplies, answering phone calls, and picking up samples. Working under direct supervision of a licensed CLS, sets up routine HLA procedures using approved procedures and protocols according to career-entry level standards of practice. Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in routine testing. Validates and documents all test results personally performed according to established procedures for manual and electronic data management and reporting. Recognizes basic problems in test methodology and instrument function, and initiates problem solving activities and corrective action procedures. Acquires the ability to recognize complex problems and solve them with minimal consultation. Uses established quality assurance protocols to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and analytical procedures including assaying appropriate standards and controls, and performing instrument function verifications. Prepares reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures. Acquires a basic understanding of the theory of HLA, its complex and constantly changing nomenclature, and genetics, as well as the technical skills and application of laboratory test procedures involved. Develops interpretive skills necessary for advancement. Assists in the collection of research data, as requested. Interacts with physicians and other hospital staff to promote quality patient care and a positive image of the laboratory. Demonstrates a working knowledge of specimen requirements, normal ranges, critical values, and acquires the knowledge of alternate HLA strategies. Performs other duties and assignments as requested. Education Requirements: Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college with at least one year’s coursework in biological science or chemistry, or equivalent experience. Experience: No experience required, but applicants with some experience in a clinical or research laboratory preferred.
