Incumbents perform journey level mechanical maintenance, repairs, and alterations, including airframe, power plant, propeller or appliance, to both reciprocating and turbine-powered helicopters in Sheriff Department air operations.

Incumbents must possess working knowledge of the methods of locating and diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, and other troubles; maintaining and repairing engines, airframes, and accessory equipment; and knowledge of operation and preventive maintenance requirements of the helicopters to be maintained.

Helicopter Mechanics serve a one year probationary period during which time they receive structured in-service training in the repair and maintenance of complex multi-engine turbine powered helicopters.

Successful completion of departmental in-service training programs is a condition of completing the one year probationary period.Essential Job FunctionsDisassembles and reassembles airframes, engines, and other component parts, including main and tail rotor assemblies and gear boxes as required to maintain equipment in airworthy condition.

Performs scheduled inspections, troubleshoots, repairs or replaces faulty parts as required.Completes hourly and calendar inspections.Makes repairs to airframes, including sheet metal, and composites.Participates in periodic refresher training in engine, airframe, or other maintenance, repair, or related topics.Repairs and maintains fixed wing aircraft, as required.RequirementsSELECTION REQUIREMENTSThree years of experience in the repair and maintenance of helicopters, one year of which must have been in responsible charge of completing major and minor inspections and repairs to return helicopters to flight status.LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREDA valid Airframe and Powerplant mechanic’s certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.*A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.PHYSICAL CLASSPhysical Class III

Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.Additional InformationEXAMINATION CONTENTThis examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.TRANSFER SCORESApplicants that have taken any identical test with the Sheriff’s Department within the last twelve (12) months will have their test scores automatically transferred to this examination.This examination may be used in the future for new examinations with the Sheriff’s Department.

Scores will be transferred to the new examination.
