Research Scientist, Organic Chemistry

Agilent Research Laboratories, which powers the growth of Agilent Technologies through breakthrough science and technology, has a new opening for a Research Chemist with deep expertise in organic chemistry and creative analytics to solve problems related to the synthesis of biomolecules and the measurement and analysis of biological systems.

For example, conduct applied research into developing new chemistries, reagents and methodologies for advancing state of the art DNA and RNA oligonucleotide synthesis, developing new methods for biomolecule conjugation and labeling, and developing new methods for analytics of biomolecules.

You will join an innovative, multidisciplinary team developing state-of-the-art technologies for advancing Agilent’s current and future measurement solutions and their use in life sciences and clinical research.

As part of this effort, the candidate will also participate in establishing strategic collaborations between Agilent Labs and external researchers to validate and proliferate these novel methods, communicate progress and results to management and technical leadership, to selected external organizations, and when appropriate, to the general scientific community via presentations at scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D.

in Chemistry plus two years postdoctoral experience, or equivalent, with an emphasis on biochemistry.

Demonstrated deep expertise in mechanistic understanding of chemical reactions and the principles of physical organic chemistry, kinetics and thermodynamics as demonstrated by improving and/or developing new chemistries related to biomolecule synthesis.

Demonstrated success innovating and developing new or emerging chemistries including identifying and comprehending side reactions.

Experience performing multi-step synthetic organic chemistry.

Deep expertise in developing, optimizing and employing analytical assay methods and protocols (for example using LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR) for identifying and understanding issues involved in chemical processes.

Knowledge of modern fluorescent labeling and detection technologies.

Demonstrated initiative and pursuit of successful collaborative research projects with interdisciplinary teams.

Strong problem-solving and analytical expertise.

Excellent communication skills including with expert and interdisciplinary audiences.

Excellent teamwork skills and demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary teams.

Desired Qualifications: Understanding of solution/surface interface chemistry Experience in solid-phase synthesis Experience in nucleic acid and phosphorus chemistry Experience in nucleic acids enzymology and biochemistry as it relates to nucleic acid measurement.

Experience in molecular and cell biology techniques including PCR, NGS, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry.
