We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Optical Systems Engineer – Space Test Automation to join our Space Systems Special Test Equipment (STE) team at our El Segundo, California campus to further help evolve our technology by creating innovative solutions for complex remote sensing applications across all Space programs and grow our business into new domains and markets.
As the Principal Optical Systems Engineer – Space Test Automation you will be responsible for the design, Supply Chain Management (SCM) / supplier technical exchange, development, assembly / production, Integration & Test (I&T), performance verification and validation of Optical Special Test Equipment (STE) for Space hardware and remote sensing applications.

Security Clearance Requirement: An active and in-scope Secret or above level U.S. Security Clearance is required; U.S. citizenship is required due to U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Required Skills:
- Strong experience working with optical metrology tools, such as: interferometers, theodolites, and laser trackers (experience validating optical alignment and/or wavefront error with 4D or Zygo interferometers preferred and experience working with Leica laser trackers using Spatial Analyzer software preferred)
- Extensive experience working in an engineering laboratory transitioning from design to production / manufacturing through integration and test creating assembly procedures, test plans, and requirements verification for Optical Special Test Equipment (STE)
- Advanced experience working with testing hardware and/or Special Test Equipment (STE) supporting test equipment calibration, calculating measurement uncertainty budgets, and resolving issues with software controlled electrical and mechanical support equipment
- Experience creating and presenting engineering design, production, integration and test presentations and summary explanations for Sr. Level Stakeholders
Desired Skills:
- Optical design modeling software experience, such as Code V, FRED, Zemax, etc.
- Technical team leadership experience
- Radiometry and Spectrophotometry experienced preferred
- Experience with prototyping preferred
- Understanding of Space environmental (thermal, vibration, and vacuum) test methodology
- Experience supporting, leading, and/or presenting formal reviews such as Test Readiness Review (TRR), Failure Review Board (FRB), and Consent to Ship Review (CTSR)
- Proficient in MATLAB, LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and/or related programming languages
- Current Top Secret or SSBI Security Clearance highly preferred
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related STEM Degree Program (Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Sciences, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and/or Aerospace Engineering preferred) with 8+ years of relevant experience required – OR
- Master’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related STEM Degree Program (Master’s Degree in Optical Sciences, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and/or Aerospace Engineering preferred) with 6+ years of relevant experience required
