The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking a Lead Space Communications Systems Engineer (Level 4, 5, or 6) to join the team in El Segundo, CA . The Space and Launch Team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. We work with commercial and proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space. Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, performance analysis, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.
The selected candidate will be responsible to design, develop, and deliver state-of-the-art communications payload systems for space-based applications for commercial, civil, milsatcom, and/or national security programs. You will interact with customers, suppliers, program management, integration and test engineers, and senior technologists and you will lead a highly motived team with domestic or international customers on their latest satellite systems
Position Responsibilities:
Define and develop satellite systems and payload architectures
Lead trade studies
Define and verify space payload system requirements and interfaces
Lead system-level CONOPS development, functional analysis and decomposition
Lead system-level integration and validation
Perform analyses and simulations for space payload systems
Develop analysis tools using MATLAB and object-oriented software platforms
Develop and verify system algorithms that meet functional and performance requirements
Perform hardware procurement, design reviews, and unit sell-off
Lead system test preparation, execution, troubleshooting, and verification
Mentor the program junior communication systems engineers and review their work for quality
This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will have the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, performing work weekly onsite and remotely. Please note that the hybrid work schedule is subject to program/business needs.
This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor’s Degree or higher; ten (10) or more years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree is acceptable.
3+ years of experience with systems engineering
3+ years of experience with digital payload design, analysis, development, and verification
1+ years of experience within the aerospace, defense, or similar high-tech industry
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
5+ years of work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
10+ years of work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in RF, digital, and/or optical communications
Experience with RF Communication analyses
Experience Matlab/Simulink, C#, Python, and C++
Experience with digital/RF communications hardware and lab equipment
Experience with the following: Digital signal processing (DSP), Waveform design, and Antenna theory
Typical Education/ Experience:
Lead (Level 4)
Bachelor’s degree and typically 9 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a Master’s degree with typically 7 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Senior (Level 5)
Bachelor’s degree typically 14 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a Master’s degree with typically 12 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 9 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Expert (Level 6)
Bachelor’s degree and typically 20 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a Master’s degree with typically 18 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 15 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
