Lead Real Time Software Engineer

The Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), Space and Launch Division is seeking a Lead Real Time Software Engineer (Level 4) to support the team in El Segundo, CA.  This position provides an opportunity to work with an experienced, interdisciplinary team to develop a unique system to meet challenging requirements on a dynamic development program.  Along with this program, the El Segundo site supports a large portfolio of commercial and government satellites programs.

The Phantom Works team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. We work with proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space.  Our team focuses on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-focused technologies for a variety of customers.  Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.

Position Overview:

you will collaborate with teammates, design, implement, integrate, test and resolve supplier issues for our Phantom Works team.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads activities to develop, document and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.

  • Leads development of code and integration of complex software components into a fully functional software system.

  • Develops software verification plans, test procedures and test environments, executing the test procedures and documenting test results to ensure software system requirements are met.

  • Provides technical leadership for software projects and leads software supplier management activities.

  • Leads development, selection, tailoring and deployment of processes, tools and metrics.

  • Plans, executes and documents software research and development projects.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for software domains, system-specific issues, processes and regulations.

  • Tracks and evaluates software team and supplier performance to ensure product and process conformance to project plans and industry standards.

  • Develop, integrate, and test of embedded flight software on a rapid development satellite program.

  • Contribute to the full software life cycle.

  • Partner with systems engineering and test to write software that meets program needs.

  • Facilitate translation of detailed requirements and algorithms into flight software by closely working with subject matter experts and the software team.

  • Define software-in-the-loop environments as well as a hardware-in-the-loop integration and test environments.

  • Works under minimal direction.

Work Authorization:

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship required).  (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

This position requires a current Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) US Citizenship required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Technical Bachelor’s, Master’s or a PhD degree (A technical degree is defined as any four year degree, or greater, in a mathematics, scientific or information technology field of study.)

  • 5 years or more of experience in a range of computer programming languages (must be fluent in C/C++).  

  • 5 years or more of experience in the development of real-time embedded software in C++ for space domain applications (GN&C, Vehicle Management System (VMS), mission, and/or C&DH).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience (highly desired) with agile development processes and methods.

  • Experience in development, build and test of small and medium-sized spacecraft.

  • Experience in a dynamic rapid prototyping environment.

  • Experience developing middle-ware software.

  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems, such as Integrity, Real-Time Linux or VxWorks.

  • Knowledge of low-level programming with real-time constraints (example APIs include Unity and the Unreal Engine).

  • Knowledge of computer hardware architectures and the extent to which they influence low level software.

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation.
