Experienced Optical Communications Systems Engineer

As an Experienced Optical Communications Systems Engineer (Level 3), you will design, develop, and deliver state-of-the-art laser communication systems for space-based applications for commercial, civil, milsatcom, and/or national security programs. You will lead a highly-motivated team that works with domestic or international customers on their latest satellite systems.

Project assignments typically span the complete program life cycle, from internal trades, concept studies and system definition, to development, launch, and on-orbit operations and test. Candidates will belong to a systems engineering team interacting with customers, suppliers, program management, integration and test engineers, and senior technologists.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, integrate, and test a variety of electrical and electronic systems in support of Electro-optical and laser communications systems.

  • Develops and validates requirements for unique electro-optical, sensor, laser and other electromagnetic systems and components.

  • Develops and validates electro-optical requirements for electricalelectronic systems, mechanical systems, and interfaces.

  • Performs trade studies, modeling, simulation and other forms of analysis to predict performance and to optimize design around complex requirements.

  • Interface with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

  • Support checkout and test of prototype electronics including the ability to debug and troubleshoot electrical and electronics designs.

This position requires an active/current U.S. Security Clearance with a Tier 5 Investigation (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI), that has been successfully completed within the last 5 years. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

Basic Qualifications (Required skills/experience):

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.

  • Experience with electro-optical systems.

  • Experience with Communication Systems Engineering (RF and/or Optical).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired skills/experience):

  • Experience Matlab/Simulink and C++.

  • Experience in RF and digital signal processing (DSP).

  • Experience with digital/RF communications hardware and lab equipment.

Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
