About the Position

This newly created position provides high-level leadership and strategic guidance to the leadership team  at Stephen Wise Temple and Schools.  As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the position is responsible for complying with and implementing labor laws, policies, procedures and best practices, as well as identifying long-term HR goals and objectives.

The Senior Director has a dual role: equal parts strategic and tactical: this position is expected to be detailed, hands-on and tactical. But we are also looking for a strategist who can identify and develop our culture throughout the organization. The Senior Director of Human Resources supervises a Payroll & HR Administrator, and reports jointly to the CFO and Executive Director/COO.

Founded in 1964, Stephen Wise Temple is one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues and schools in the world. The Wise community consists of a thriving congregation; Wise School (a top-tier K-6 elementary school and Early Childhood Center); Center for Youth Engagement (including Religious School, teen programming, and Camp Wise); weekly worship services; and hundreds of opportunities for deep learning, tikkun olam (social justice/helping those in need), and Jewish engagement throughout the year. With 1,600 member families and more than 170 regular employees, Wise is known for its extensive educational, spiritual, and musical programs designed for individuals, couples, and families at all stages of life.

The Wise campus is located on 19 beautiful acres atop the Mulholland Corridor of the Santa Monica Mountains and includes the state-of-the-art Katz Family Pavilion for athletic activities and diverse major events. About You

You are highly organized, detail-oriented HR professional who is equally comfortable working independently and as a member of a team.  You have significant experience in Human Resources, not as part of your job, but all of your job.  As a senior HR professional, you have sufficient gravitas to effectively communicate with executive leaders as well as our entry-level line staff. No job is too big or too small.  You like managing multiple projects and issues all at the same time and can prioritize important from urgent.  Perhaps most importantly, you know what you don’t know and seek expert advice when warranted.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates with senior leadership to define the organizations mission and goals; identifies ways to support the mission through talent-management strategies.
  2. Identifies and drives key performance indicators for the organization’s human resource and talent management functions.
  3. Researches, develops, and implements competitive benefits and performance management programs. Evaluates and champions adoption of opportunities in HR Tech for the benefit of the organization.
  4. Manages and resolves employee relations, compensation, and related issues both directly and by working with staff and management.
  5. Maintains knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices in employment law, human resources, and talent management.
  6. Participates in professional development and networking conferences and events.
  7. Serve as a leader in our efforts to ensure diversity, equity, inclusivity, creativity, and generosity among our workforce as defined in our strategic vision (see the Wise Way Forward and our Covenant of Inclusivity).
  8. Leads recruitment efforts: works with supervisors to screen and interview candidates, conducts reference checks, extends job offers, oversees employee onboarding, monitors career-path program, and conducts exit interviews.
  9. Drives and leads the revision of position descriptions by working with senior leadership and overseeing the HR Administrator’s role in this function. 
  10. Recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of the HR department, services offered, and quality of performance. 
  11. Contributes to workforce strategy from an overall business perspective (as well as HR).
  12. Develops and administers various human resources plans and procedures for employees. 
  13. Consults with legal counsel as needed and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10 years’ experience in Human Resources, with a significant part of that time as a senior HR leader overseeing a team in a large organization
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership and communication skills 
  • Ability to build and sustain excellent business relationships internally
  • Certification in Human Resources
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working in independent schools and/or the nonprofit sector highly preferred

Compensation

Salary at $120,000 per year, 4 weeks of paid time off annually, and extensive employee benefits package including generous tuition subsidy for children if matriculated in our schools.

Hybrid position, up to 40% remote.
