Research Nurse Practitioner – Full-Time – Oncology & Research exp. – The Angeles Clinic & Research Institute (TACRI)

Our medical oncologists, surgeons, immunotherapists, pathologists and dermatologists work closely together to tailor patient care and subsequent therapy. We are seeking a well-trained Research Nurse Practitioner (NP) who will be responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter- and intra-departmental liaison, education, leadership, and patient care management for The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute (TACRI) patients. Your Nurse Practitioner’s practice will incorporate both independent decisionmaking abilities and collaboration with the board certified/eligible physician to provide expert care to the patients. You will be responsible to the physician partners and/or supervising physician and the Director of Clinical Operations/designee and functions as an integral part of the medical team. 

Our Nurse Practitioner practices under the Board of Registered Nursing California code of regulations, Title 16, Article 8, Section 1480-1485, utilizing the Nurse Practitioner Standardized Procedures. These are developed in a collaborative effort within the area of specialty incorporating The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute’s (TACRI) goals and represent an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. You will provide individualized care upholding TACRI philosophies including, but not limited to, care consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, approved Standardized Procedures, Code of Ethics and Conduct, and organizational policies and procedures. You will enhance competency skills through continuing education programs and demonstrate the ability to provide care to special patient population and those with diverse cultural background. Will perform all job duties with sensitivity and attention to age and developmental milestones of the population(s) served which may include adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Strong skills to identify the ability of the age specific population served to follow direction/instructions and give consent to treatment will be essential in this role. Ability to identify safety concerns and institute measures to provide safe environment and provide appropriate assessment, intervention, and evaluation of patients with consideration of developmental milestones in the population served is essential.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fosters the values and supports the mission of The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute (TACRI).
  • Uses expert hematologic and oncologic knowledge, clinical skills, and critical thinking in managing daily delivery of patient care services assuring implementation of the appropriate clinical processes and coordinating/promoting an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care.
  • Writes patient care orders and delegates as appropriate to licensed and unlicensed health care providers and other TACRI staff as indicated with scope of practice, assuring optimal levels of clinical effectiveness and services for all customers.
  • Performs a thorough age specific history and physical along with appropriate follow up and documentation of the results.
  • Performs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for identification and management of patient diagnosis following established standardized protocols.  Appropriately documents procedures and follow-up as necessary.
  • Assesses, facilitates, and role models appropriate resolution of patient/client/family psychosocial problems and/or support needs.
  • Assesses quality of patient care delivery and identifies opportunities for changes in practice, rooted in evidence-based standards of care/protocols, which promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Acts as a liaison/consultant promoting inter-intradepartmental communication and collaboration.
  • Role models patient advocacy behaviors.
  • Analyzes new skills, technology and equipment for safety and clinical/fiscal efficacy.
  • Evaluates and assesses patient/family readiness to learn; individualized learning ability; provides age specific education; initiates and reinforces as needed.
  • Educates and mentors staff in the development of sound clinical judgment (synthesis of clinical data and determination of subsequent plan) to promote positive patient outcomes.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Clinical Operations/Executive Director, develops service goals and operations/business plans for clinical services specifically, and as a component of the continuum of care within TACRI.
  • Establishes and maintains patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, documentation and billing processes, are completed safely and effectively.

Clinical Research Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for clinical coverage for oncology patients both standard of care and clinical trials. Perform histories and physicals, reviewing labs, assessing adverse events, contacting patients with results, conducting tele-visits, charting, placing orders, writing prescriptions, make follow-up clinical decisions under the supervision of physician principal investigators, monitor adverse events and participant safety, perform diagnostic and efficacy assessments as delegated, cultivate superb professional relationships with study participants, and conduct other research-related activities including entry of medical data, informed consent procedures, participation in study meetings and other regular meetings.

  • Identify and accrue patients for clinical research under direction of Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Implement interventions for experimental studies.
  • Outpatient related patient consultations and education for clinical research.
  • Ensure all clinical activities are conducted in accordance with established research protocols and standards in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedural requirements.
  • Demonstrate understanding of all professional and regulator standards.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree required
  • Master of Science Degree in Nursing required
  • Graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)

License/Certification:

  • Current unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license issued by the State of California required.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certificate required.
  • Furnishing number issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner required.
  • OCN or AOCN preferred within one year of service strongly preferred.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification required.

 Experience:

  • Oncology Nursing: Two (2) years of oncology experience in nursing preferably in an outpatient setting.
  • Research: Working experience with Clinical Trial patients strongly preferred.
  • Experience with EPIC with Willow & Beacon modules for medication and chemo.
  • Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and other suite products.
  • Ten percent travel to see patients in other clinic offices when needed.
