Position : Registered Nurse (RN) Department : 6West – Post Surgical Location : St.
Vincent’s East – Trussville, AL Shift : Full Time – Day shift – 7a to 7p – Every 3 rd Weekend (36 hours weekly).

6 West, Post-Operative Bariatric , is a 24 bed unit that focuses on patients who are post
– operative weight loss surgery.
The most common procedures that are performed on the patients is a Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy.
These patients are well educated on the risks/benefits of the procedure and they are knowledgeable on the post-operative care and goals of the bariatric surgery.
These patients generally are seen by a nutritionist, and a diabetic educator prior to being discharged.
The length of stay for this patient population is one-two days.
This unit has an admit /discharge nurse to assist with the activity and throughput from the recovery room.
On 6 West, the nursing team can also provide care to post
– operative patients who had general surgeries such as appendectomy, mastectomy, hernia repair, colonoscopy, laparoscopic surgeries, cholecystectomy, hysteroscopy and inguinal hernia surgery, etc.
6 West is an exceptional unit to develop your knowledge and skills on how to care for the Post-Operative Bariatric patient and post -operative General Surgeries.
Additionally, the nursing team utilizes critical thinking skills caring for these complex patients.
Multiple consultations are sometimes ordered for the patient based on the initial diagnosis and current medical status.
The nurse to patient ratio is 1:4-5.
The unit is usually full and therefore the nurses are usually able to work their standard 36 hours per week at 3 12 hour shifts.
The uniform color is navy blue and approved Ascension t-shirts can be worn.

What You Will Do: Provide direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.
Implement and monitor patient care plans.
Monitor, record and communicate patient condition as appropriate.
Serve as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.
Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.
Assess and coordinate patients discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.
What You Will Need: Licensure / Certification / Registration: BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
Licensed Associate Professional Registered Nurse credentialed from the Alabama Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
Education: Diploma from an accredited school/college of nursing required.
