Job Summary:The Behavioral Health Specialist role is integrated within the Family Medicine Residency (FM) program at AltaMed and will utilize the primary care behavioral health delivery (PCBH) model.

The behaviorist will emphasize evidence-based, integrated educational and clinical practice as part of primary care patients’ physical and emotional health needs by employing a team-based care approach to enhance the care of residents’ patients, as well as the training of residents.

The behaviorist will address the challenges of providing effective family medicine care for vulnerable populations and engage residents on topics and skills to address social determinants, mental health conditions, utilization of proper evidenced-based screening tools, knowledge of effective evidenced-based behavioral health treatments, crisis intervention skills, creating effective patient-centered care plans, and resident self-care.

In addition to the role’s integration within the Family Medicine Residency program, the behaviorist will also collaborate with the AltaMed Health Education and Wellness department to assist AltaMed medical staff on the development of a personal self-care plan in order to promote resiliency and provider engagement.

Primary duties include supervision of family medicine residents in behavioral medicine within the PCBH consultation model at the AltaMed South Gate clinic.

The behaviorist will facilitate behavioral science curriculum development and teaching for the FM residency including, but not limited to, conducting Balint /support Groups and an integrated PCBH rotation for residents; completing resident training evaluations and providing timely and constructive feedback to residents about patient-provider style and interaction (including two observed and evaluated interactions per resident annually).The behaviorist will have appropriate time to succeed in both their clinical and academic roles, with specific time dedicated to patient care, clinical teaching, wellness coaching, supervision of learners on rotation and protected time dedicated to academic and administrative work.Skills and Abilities:1.

Ability to assess patient behavioral health needs, provide non-pharmacologic interventions for episodic and/or acute behavioral health needs2.

Ability to supervise residents and collaborate with team around patients with complex chronic care needs3.

Ability to consult with primary care providers on the management, especially medication management, of severe/chronic mental illness and/or actively manage these patients in collaboration with the primary care team4.

Ability to provide education and consultation on behavioral issues5.

Ability to provide behavioral health support for team membersPhysical Requirements:1.

Ability to sit, stand, stoop, reach, lift (up to 10 pounds), bend, etc., hand and wrist dexterity to utilize computer.2.

Some travel required to sites/programs, special functions or external meetings.Environmental Conditions Critical to Performance:1.

Work is in an office environment; climate controlled through central air conditioning.2.

Will be exposed to outside environment while traveling.Education and Experience:1.

Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in clinical or counseling psychology, family therapy, or social work from an accredited program required.2.

Completion of a clinical internship/residency appropriate for the field of study (such as an internship/residency in clinical and/or counseling psychology/social work.)3.

Experience working in an academic setting is preferred4.

1-2 years of experience in providing integrated behavioral health services using the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model.

Knowledgeable of current medical staff self-care and resiliency models of care.5.

Clinically active, working in direct patient care and/or the supervision of patient care.Essential Job Functions of Job Description1.

Supervise Family Medicine residents, following procedures for appropriate trainee levels of supervision and requirements for residency training (Supervision Policy) to ensure patient safety and high-quality care at all times.2.

Respect resident work hours, paying close attention to signs of Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation in individuals; if signs of fatigue areidentified, faculty are required to follow the protocol outlined in the [Fatigue Mitigation] Policy, “Promoting resident self-care and monitoring self-care plan”.3.

Be available for residents; competently address issues of depression, addiction and other concerns they may have for their patients.4.

Collaborate with the Health Education and Wellness program on medical staff resiliency models of care.5.

Be a role model6.

Observe and evaluate two FMP patient encounters per resident annually; providing meaningful and structured feedback to the resident.7.

Evaluate Family Medicine residents, using competency based/milestone evaluations and via direct observation and other relevant evaluation methods8.

Coordinate (including possible creation and/or revaluation) relevant behavioral health curriculum and didactics9.

Serve on relevant committees10.

Participate regularly in scheduled didactics (including, but not limited to: journal clubs, lectures, interdisciplinary conferences, workshops)11.

Demonstrate a commitment to scholarly work, both self-directed and with residents.PandoLogic.
